Help pets like Citra before 2025! Citra & Eleana received training through the Behavior Assistance Program thanks to you. Eleana adopted Citra from Austin Animal Center in 2024 to join her family with her other dog Ringo. While Citra bonded to her family and brother quickly, it became apparent that she was anxious each time Eleana left the house. Citra also began guarding things from Ringo and could be a gremlin on leash. Seeking help to settle Citra down and make sure there was harmony between her pups, Eleana looked into training, but quickly found that “most companies I inquired with were charging upwards of $2-3,000 dollars,” which was cost-prohibitive for her. She reached out to Friends of AAC and through our Behavior Assistance Program and we were able to offer her a voucher for free training with an expert, positive-reinforcement trainer. Eleana chose Dog Possible and worked with Amy Fitzsimmons, who jumped into action to help Eleana implement various anxiety reduction strategies, including getting a departure routine in place to ease Citra’s anxiety and panic when Eleana leaves the house. Amy also helped Eleana adjust some strategies around feeding time, which has eliminated Citra’s guarding behavior toward her dog brother Ringo. The results have been powerful. Eleana shared: “Amy helped me understand Citra and her anxiety; we’ve been working on that and she’s doing so well! Since training, we’ve practiced every day in some fashion and I’m so proud of how far she’s come. From the streets of San Antonio to a bougie life in Austin, Citra Hop thanks you so much for believing in her!” ?? It is almost Thanksgiving! I am feeling so thankful for family, friends, our own rescue pups and the success of my new company, RuffnerRose LLC! I love connecting people and matching great candidates with great firms and companies! That said, I also do some matchmaking at Friends of Austin Animal Center! This weekend the ICU Volunteer team is getting all dolled up for the Rags to Wags Austin Humane Society Gala in Austin. In honor of this fundraiser and the upcoming holiday, every day this week I am going to spotlight a dog that is available for adoption at Austin Animal Center that came through our ICU. First up, Cody! Cody is a 7-month old Shepherd mix that loves other dogs, belly rubs and lots of snuggles! He came through ICU with a skin issue where he lost a lot of his fur. Once that was resolved, this little guy was paired in a kennel with several different dogs and enjoyed shared kennel, playgroup and being loved on! Unfortunately, he contracted a respiratory condition that required he quarantine for 2 whole weeks. Poor buddy! Now is is healthy and very happy in playgroup and paired with a new roomie! The Medical Assistance Program at Friends of AAC helps animals with needs beyond the city vet services that are barriers to adoption. ????Luckily this allowed us to help Bartholomew! ? Bartholomew had a persistent problem being able to urinate normally due to a partial blockage to his urethra. Despite being a wonderful, young guy with a joyful personality, his urination issue would have been a serious barrier to him ever finding an adoptive home.? Friends of AAC stepped in to pay for perineal urethrostomy surgery which corrected his issue. ?? The day he came home from the hospital he was able to pee normally!
