关于我们

Friends Hospital is the oldest private psychiatric hospital in the United States providing psychiatric treatment to adolescents, adults, and seniors for more than 200 years. A rural oasis in an urban setting, the hospital's beautiful 100-acre campus offers a quiet refuge where healing has taken place for two centuries. In 1813, the Quakers founded Friends Hospital based on the belief that all people, even those with a mental illness, can live a “moral, ordered existence if treated with kindness, dignity and respect.” The main focus of “moral treatment” was to strengthen the mental wellness of each patient. Thus, treatment concentrated on strengthening mental health, not on curing mental illness. This was a departure from the accepted view of the time and the guiding principle on which all of the hospital’s procedures were based. Today, Friends Hospital still operates under this original mission and, using behavioral health evidence-based practices coupled with modern principles of wellness and recovery, strives to provide patients with the tools they need to understand and manage their illness in a compassionate and supportive environment. This approach has earned the facility the distinction as one of Philadelphia’s top mental health facilities and the only inpatient psychiatric hospital in Pennsylvania to achieve Top Performer on Key Quality Measures ? from The Joint Commission for four years in a row. In 2016, Friends Hospital is one of a select group of healthcare facilities in the U.S. to be named Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC).

In honor of National #PharmacyWeek, we would like to recognize the invaluable contributions pharmacists and technicians make to patient care. Our pharmacy staff provide an essential service to staff and patients. Without their medical attention and support, many people would find it difficult to optimize treatment and receive maximum benefit towards their recovery. Thank you for being a valued member of the Friends Hospital community! Pictured from left to right are Pharmacists Andrea White; Marta Perry and Tiffany Liu, Pharmacy technicians Kristine Sisco-Downs; and Gaudy Chhuth, along with Pharmacy Director, Mark Kern. The Greystone Program recently celebrated Oktoberfest on the decorated patio of Hillside House on a beautiful, sunny afternoon. The residents were interested in hearing about the history of the celebration and learning about various German traditions. Our Greystone Program Director, Nurses, and Residential Advisors prepared Oktoberfest, Knackwurst, and Bavarian sausages; along with kielbasa on the grill and roast beef, roast pork, sp?tzle and sauerkraut in the kitchen for the residents to enjoy. If anyone is in need, our Crisis Response Center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please contact us at 215-831-2600.

Our Community Liaison, Obinna St. John, had the privilege of participating in this year's Project Blue Light. Project Blue Light is a way to honor law enforcement officers and remember those who have died in the line of duty. The idea began in 1988 when Dolly Craig, a Philadelphia resident, wrote to the Concerns of Police Survivors Organization (C.O.P.S.) to say she would put a blue light in her window during the holidays to honor her son-in-law, Danny Gleason, who was a Philadelphia Police Officer killed in 1986. The brave men and women of the Philadelphia Police Department do so much for our community, and it was fantastic to be able to recognize what they do for us and their sacrifice.

Today, Rich Arnold, Community Liaison, had the pleasure of attending the Delaware County Community Support Programs' Bingo Night and Resource Fair. This event showcased a strong community commitment by uniting mental health and substance use treatment providers. The collaboration and shared dedication to improving the lives of individuals and families was truly inspiring. It’s events like these that highlight the power of collective effort in advancing mental health support, and we are proud to be part of such a supportive network. We look forward to continued partnership and impact in our community. #MentalHealthMatters
