The recent proposal, Bill 212 – Reducing Gridlock, Saving You Time Act, 2024, proposed by The Ministry of Transportation on October 21st would prohibit the installation of bike lanes when motor vehicle lanes are removed, as well as exclude highway 413’s environmental impact process and assessment. It’s estimated that ripping up bike-lanes on Yonge Street, Bloor Street and University Avenue in Toronto would cost Ontario taxpayers $48 million — on top of the $27 million the city spent installing the lanes in the first place. All to make traffic worse, increase pollution, emissions and noise, undermine economic development, weaken public health and affordability, harm street businesses, decrease equity, and generally make the city worse for everyone, including drivers. For people who have survived a collision with a vehicle, and for people who have experienced having a loved one—whether friends or family—killed or injured in a traffic crash, peer support can be an important tool in processing the complex situation they find themselves in. We will offer support group meetings each month for adults over the age of 18. Peer support meetings are solely for people bereaved through the death of a family member or friend by road violence, and for those who are recovering/have recovered from traumatic injury in a collision with a vehicle driver. Video cred:?Lanrick Jr Bennett Doug Ford?and?Prabmeet Sarkaria?both know that bike lanes (only on 4% of streets) are NOT the reason for car congestion. They're frantically trying to keep Ontario in a failed 1950s status quo, and distract Ontarians from the worsening affordability/livability/housing crisis, that 2.5 million Ontarians don't have a doctor, kids are breathing mold in schools, they can't get the Eglinton Crosstown running, transit projects are delayed, the TTC desperately needs provincial funding, part of the Greenbelt will be destroyed for what they know if an unnecessary highway that will only further lock in car dependence and more pollution, they killed every living thing at Ontario Place, and bottom line - there simply isn't room for all the cars! It's basic geometry.
