Success Story Alert! ?? We’re thrilled to share an inspiring story from one of our dedicated youth farmers who recently made a game-changing decision! ?? This young farmer was preparing to transport 1.2 tons of tomatoes to Kumasi, and after much discussion, he agreed to switch from traditional wooden crates to our recommended plastic crates for the journey. As an AB Test we allowed him to pack one wooden box and carry it along. The results? Absolutely remarkable! ???? Upon arrival at the market, not a single tomato in plastic crate was crushed or spoiled, and he didn’t have to discard any produce. Every single kilogram was sold, and he was paid in full! ??. But for the produce in the wooden crates, the results are attached for you to see. This isn’t just a win for him—it’s a powerful testament to the importance of adopting proper post-harvest management practices. By simply switching to plastic crates, this farmer not only preserved the quality of his produce but also maximized his profits. ?? Since June 2022, our team has been tirelessly working to commercialize tomato powder for the local Ghanaian market. Our primary objective was not only to provide a healthy alternative to tomato paste filled with chemicals and additives but also to positively impact the lives of smallholder farmers by preventing post-harvest losses. We noticed significant value chain losses of fresh tomatoes and aimed to address this by upcycling surplus, overripe, and unattractive produce into value-added products. A major challenge we faced was the watery nature of the tomato variety produced in Ghana. After over 25 months of R&D, spending over GHc135K, five product iterations, and countless production process refinements, we are delighted to announce that we have unlocked the key to making tomato powder using the same Ghanaian cultivar. This new process yields more, has better color, and offers a far superior taste. We are excited about this development because it allows Ghanaian farmers to continue cultivating the variety they are experienced with while transitioning to new improved varieties. We will soon be launching this new improved version on the market. We cannot emphasize enough the impact that UNICEF StartUp Lab Ghana, GIZ Ghana has had on our journey. The recent funding from Kosmos Innovation Center Ghana and the Mastercard Foundation has made this significant milestone possible.
