This fall #FremontUnified has stocked and opened School-Based Community Closets, like this one at Cabrillo Elementary, that are easily accessible to students and families to help meet some of their basic needs. This resource is made possible by the Housing & Homeless Incentive Program in partnership with the Alliance Housing and Community Services program, which support students experiencing homelessness. Through the grant, Fremont Unified is providing new clothing, shoes, hygiene kits, non-perishable food items, and more. HUGE shout out to Family Liaison Melissa Espinoza for her work to make this happen! Ms. Espinoza is part of Student Support Services, which provides a variety of support for students and families from enrollment to graduation. Find out more about the department and access helpful contacts and resources at https://lnkd.in/g5QVF857.

This fall seniors from each comprehensive high school in Fremont Unified were named 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists. In all, 101 FUSD students were among the approximately 16,000 semifinalists named nationally, representing less than one percent of high school seniors nationwide. For the fourth year in a row, the City of Fremont is in the top three California cities in terms of total semifinalists. Fremont, the 16th most populous city in the state, has 118 semifinalists, trailing only San Diego and the City of San José, the second- and third-most populous cities in California. 2025 National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced between April and July 2025. We are proud to announce that the California School Boards Association has named #FremontUnified’s Climate Literacy and Environmental Action Network (CLEAN) a 2024 Golden Bell Award Winner! The Golden Bell Award promotes excellence in education and school board governance throughout California, and it was awarded to CLEAN in the Climate Change Innovation category in recognition of its outstanding work to coordinate the implementation of student-initiated Board resolutions on climate matters. Since CLEAN was founded in October of 2021, and at the direction of the Board of Education, Fremont Unified has expanded and strengthened its environmental leadership and partnerships, increased waste reduction efforts, and launched TK-12 climate literacy and environmental education that informs, educates, and empowers students. This work is a collaborative effort amongst many District departments, with coordination through CLEAN to align efforts. At the October 23 Board meeting, some of the leaders in this work (Instructional Coach Nate Ivy from the Curriculum & Instruction Department, Public Information Officer Laura Forrest from the Superintendent's Office, Grounds Supervisor Jeremy Schneider from Operations and Grounds, Director Johannes van der Pool, RD from Child Nutrition Services, Recycling Coordinator Stephanie Willits, Director Ernest Epley from the Transportation Department) were recognized by Superintendent Erik Burmeister for their work in support of CLEAN, and stood as representatives of their departments and the many employees engaged in making the District greener and cleaner. Love to see this! Yesterday Grimmer Elementary students and staff got moving with San Francisco 49ers Prep. Thanks to Principal Matt Kaufman and the Grimmer Bears Team for giving these students a great experience, and to 49ers Prep for its programs that support young people in our area. #GoNiners
I spent Tuesday morning with Fremont Unified School District students at Grimmer Elementary and the folks from San Francisco 49ers Prep--a community-based organization that gets kids moving, outdoors, and working together. A shoutout to first-year principal Matt Kaufman, who daily illustrates what it looks like to give back to the community he grew up in! Thanks to our staff, who make these memorable experiences possible. And, thanks to our friends from 49ers Prep for supporting our youth. I even got to brush off my hand-off skills with the kids! Go Niners! Johanna White
