    As I celebrate 25 years of owning and running a communication agency, Freestyle Marketing Group, I've thought about some of the principles that helped guide our team to become better at what they do. One key lesson we tried to emphasize to new employees is captured in the following article.

    THE SECRET SAUCE: HOW LIKING CLIENTS SPARK BETTER WORK In advertising, it’s easy to focus on how much money or prestige a client represents. But there’s another big factor that often gets overlooked: whether you actually like the people you’re working for. Believe it or not, that connection, the comfort and trust you have in each other, can make a big impact on how creative and effective your work turns out. Why Liking Your Clients Matters When you truly enjoy working with a client (or anyone, for that matter), you’ll naturally put more thought and energy into?it. Conversations feel easier and everyone’s more open to sharing ideas without the usual fear of judgment. It’s a lot like any close friendship or family relationship. When there’s genuine respect and understanding, it’s easier to be honest, try new things, and take a little risk. The Power of Trust Trust is everything when it comes to creativity. If you know your client believes in the ideas that you, yourself, believe in, you’re far more willing to experiment. When both sides feel safe pushing boundaries, that’s where the real magic happens and when truly memorable advertising campaigns are born. Why Agencies Pick Their Clients It would be silly to say that revenue and recognition aren't important. Agencies have bills like everyone else, so?those factors?should?play a role in how agencies decide which clients to work with.?But if an agency never stops to ask, “Do we actually connect with these people? Can we have fun while working together?” they might end up with challenging relationships that make creativity an uphill battle. And isn't "creativity" what clients are paying agencies for? Balancing Profit and People Finding clients who pay well and are also a great fit can be challenging and sometimes seemingly impossible. But they?are out there. And agencies who are lucky enough to find them and are able to strike this balance often do their best work. Their teams stay motivated longer, look forward to new challenges, and genuinely care as much as the clients do about the outcome of each campaign. Meanwhile, clients who feel appreciated and understood are more open to bold, creative ideas. And, hopefully, more forgiving if an experiment doesn’t go perfectly on the first try. The Bottom Line Yes, money and opportunity matter. But if you neglect the simple act of liking your clients, you risk losing out on the kind of creative inspirations that can make advertising really impactful. At the end of the day, the most memorable campaigns often come from agencies and clients who genuinely click on a personal level. When there’s real trust and understanding on both sides, incredible ideas have the freedom to take shape. And that's when advertising can really shine.
