Today, FreeState Justice commemorates Trans Day of Remembrance. This is a day to honor the Trans members of our LGBTQ+ community who came before us. Whose lives were lost to the systemic issues of violence that have affected our communities for generations and who were subjected to the discrimination we still see now. We celebrate their memory not only today but every day as we encourage everyone to learn from their Pride. This Day of Remembrance comes at a particularly tenuous time for our Trans community. The last few months saw more than $225 million spent on anti-LGBTQ+ election ads, with the vast majority targeting the Transgender community. This kind of speech fosters prejudice, negatively affects public perception, and can lead to increases in the violence we have worked so hard to end. It was heartbreaking to see these ads, yet it has inspired us to fight even harder to ensure that Trans folks — not only in Maryland but in this entire country — have what they need to live with authenticity and respect.
