关于我们
Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) is a non-profit organization that that protects, defends, and empowers public-interest journalism in the 21st Century. The organization works to preserve and strengthen First and Fourth Amendment rights guaranteed to the press through a variety of avenues, including the development of encryption tools, documentation of attacks on the press, training in newsrooms on digital security practices, and advocacy for the the public’s right to know. We aim to protect and promote the basic human right of freedom of the press, both in the United States and abroad, in a world where surveillance, censorship, and hacking risks are becoming more sophisticated and pervasive.

Come join us and?the Journalism Protection Initiative at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY?for a panel discussion on how to stop online harassment, especially around elections. Campaigns of online harassment have become a key election tool, used to intimidate and punish critical reporters. Female, queer journalists and journalists of color are particularly vulnerable. This session, featuring a panel of experts and journalists, will look at how the strategies and tactics of self defense have evolved, and what journalists can do in this shifting landscape to protect themselves online. ?? Oct. 15, 6-7:30 pm ET ?? 219 W 40th St, New York, NY 10018 Room 308
Covering elections is complicated – and can also be dangerous. Over the next few weeks, the Journalism Protection Initiative at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY will host a series of conversations on how journalists can best protect their sources and themselves in the real and virtual worlds. We will delve into specific challenges journalists face: What’s the best and most effective way to work with whistleblowers and confidential sources? What rights do journalists have to stay on the scene of a protest when police issue a curfew or dispersal order? Are efforts to protect journalists from online harassment actually working? The series kicks off next Tuesday, September 17, starting at 6 pm with a discussion that pairs investigative reporter John Carreyrou with Erika Cheung, who was a whistleblower and confidential source on the Theranos story. It’s the first time the two of them have spoken publicly about the nature of their relationship, and what worked and didn't work both in terms of ensuring the public had access to essential information and that Cheung was protected. They will be joined by Margaux Ewen from The Signals Network, which advocates for whistleblowers and helps mediate their relationship with the media. The conversations will continue on October 1 with a discussion about the rights of journalists covering protests, which we’ve dubbed “On the Skirmish Line.” We will be joined by leading legal experts and advocates from the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, and The New York Civil Liberties Union. Two journalists with wide experience covering protests and policing will also participate — Wesley Lowery and Katie Nelson. Finally, on October 15, we will dissect efforts to protect journalists from online harassment with experts from PEN America, Freedom of the Press Foundation, and The New York Times. All events will begin at 6 pm and take place at the Newmark School in New York. Join us for one or all three events (you must register in advance in order to attend). https://lnkd.in/eDF-FM-q

At least 130 journalists and media workers have been killed by Israel since the start of the Israel-Gaza war in Oct. 2023, according to RSF. “If there are no journalists, there’s no one who can independently verify this and tell the world…Then the Israeli army becomes the source of information.”

It’s not just NYC. As FPF's Kirstin McCudden told CJR, police departments from LA to Chicago and on college campuses across the country have arrested, kettled and otherwise harassed journalists covering protests in recent months. It needs to stop.

Journalists are entitled to record police. Period. There is no “work zone” exception to the First Amendment. These cops are just making it up as they go. They don’t care if they get sued – it’s your money, not theirs.
