?? NEW: #FreedomInTheWorld 2025 is now LIVE! https://lnkd.in/gYub4DZv Violence and repression around elections, ongoing armed conflicts, and the spread of authoritarian practices contributed to the 19th consecutive year of global freedom in decline. 60 countries saw the deterioration of their political rights and civil liberties in 2024, and only 34 secured improvements. El Salvador, Haiti, Kuwait, and Tunisia were among this year’s largest declines, while Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Syria recorded the largest gains. During an unprecedented year of elections, many contests were marred by violence and authoritarian efforts to curb the competition. In over 40% of the 66 countries and territories that held national elections last year, candidates were targeted with assassination attempts, polling places were attacked, or postelection protests were suppressed with undue force. Conflicts spread instability and thwarted democratic progress around the world. Nonstate armed groups—including militias, mercenaries, and criminal organizations—played an outsized role in destabilizing global security and obstructing fundamental rights, in addition to conflicts in Sudan, Gaza, Myanmar, and Ukraine. Despite the overall global decline in freedom, positive developments demonstrated the potential for democratic breakthrough. New governments in Bangladesh, Senegal, Syria, and elsewhere will now face the difficult task of building and strengthening democratic institutions while also protecting individual rights. Democratic solidarity will be crucial in the coming year. Global freedom faces serious challenges in 2025, and it is in the vital interest of all those who believe in representative government to invest in democratic institutions at home, call out attacks on rights abroad, work together to promote lasting peace, and support human rights defenders wherever they operate. We are founded on the core conviction that freedom flourishes in democratic nations where governments are accountable
关于我们
Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization that supports the expansion of freedom around the world. Freedom House supports democratic change, monitors freedom, and advocates for democracy and human rights. Since its founding in 1941 by prominent Americans concerned with the mounting threats to peace and democracy, Freedom House has been a vigorous proponent of democratic values and a steadfast opponent of dictatorships of the far left and the far right. Eleanor Roosevelt and Wendell Willkie served as Freedom House’s first honorary co-chairpersons. Throughout its history, Freedom House has opposed tyranny around the world, including dictatorships in Latin America, apartheid in South Africa, Soviet domination of Central and Eastern Europe, and religiously-based totalitarian regimes such as those governing Sudan, Iran and Saudi Arabia. Freedom House has promoted the growth of freedom by encouraging U.S. policymakers, international institutions, and the governments of established democracies to adopt policies that advance human rights and democracy around the world. At the same time, Freedom House provides support to individuals working in the world's young democracies to overcome debilitating legacies of tyranny, dictatorship and political repression; as well as to activists working in repressive societies to bring about greater freedom and openness. Freedom House translates the intangible values of freedom into a strong tangible impact by combining analysis, advocacy and action.
