Ella Baker was a prominent civil rights activist whose work spanned several decades in the 20th century. Born on December 13, 1903, in Norfolk, Virginia, and raised in North Carolina, she was deeply influenced by her grandparents’ experiences with slavery and their dedication to social justice. Baker believed in grassroots organizing and the power of collective action, which made her a pivotal figure in the civil rights movement. One of her most significant contributions was her role in founding the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1960, which became a key organization in the struggle for civil rights, especially among young activists. She advocated for the importance of local leadership and was known for her belief that "strong people don't need strong leaders." This philosophy empowered many individuals to take initiative in their communities. Baker also worked with other organizations, such as the NAACP, where she served as a field secretary, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), where she was instrumental in organizing protests and campaigns. Her emphasis on community-based strategies and her commitment to social justice continue to inspire new generations of activists. In honoring Ella Baker, we recognize not only her contributions to the civil rights movement but also her enduring legacy of empowerment and advocacy for grassroots change.

“There is no movement without Black women!” That’s what I told a room of 750 people at the Westin Hotel on Friday evening at the 4th annual Freedom Fighting Missionaries gala honoring women in the movement. The keynote speaker was THEE Dr. Angela Y. Davis! Founder Kenny Robinson gave me the privilege of welcoming guests and I used that moment to remind everyone that there is no Movement without Black women. What made the event even more special and memorable was my son attended. If you have a teen you know how hard it is to get them to go anywhere. But he did and it was amazing for walk back to my table and receive a hug from him. What an honor!

On Friday, Freedom Fighting Missionaries celebrated "Women in the Movement" at our 4th Annual Gala. I had the honor of speaking and taking a photograph with our keynote speaker, Dr. Angela Davis. Two events from that evening filled my heart with joy. First, my wife and daughter had the chance to meet and take a picture with Dr. Davis. Secondly, Dr. Davis shook my hand, looked me in the eye, and expressed her gratitude for the work we are doing. Her encouraging words were exactly what I needed to hear. ???? A team. An organization. A strategy. A movement for change. Each one is built with intention, fueled by vision, and sustained by the people who believe in something bigger than themselves. When we come together—aligned in purpose, unwavering in commitment—we don’t just build. We transform. That’s why we were proud to support Kenny Robinson and the Freedom Fighting Missionaries team at their annual gala, celebrating the work, the wins, and the unwavering pursuit of change. Because building isn’t just about structure—it’s about legacy. And legacies are built?together. #Leadership #StrategyImpact #TogetherWeBuild #WomenInTheMovement
Last night, we had the honor of attending the Freedom Fighting Missionaries' Annual Gala, a powerful evening dedicated to justice, resilience, and collective action. It was inspiring to witness the impact of this incredible organization and celebrate the progress made toward liberation and equity. This year’s gala was particularly moving in its intentional celebration of the women who have shaped and sustained the fight for justice, honoring their leadership, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment. The evening was made even more powerful by the presence of the iconic Dr. Angela Davis, whose words reminded us that "Hope is a discipline." A reminder that hope is not passive—it is something we cultivate through intentional work, strategy, and solidarity. As a woman-owned business, Springwell and Associates is especially proud to have supported Kenny Robinson and Freedom Fighting Missionaries in developing their strategic plan, ensuring their vision for systemic change is both sustainable and actionable. Our Managing Partner, Jossalyn R. Wilson, had the privilege of walking attendees through Freedom Reimagined: A Strategic Journey, a roadmap designed to sustain and expand their impact. We deeply align with their commitment to creating space for women—not just in the movement, but in leadership, strategy, and decision-making. As a business founded and led by women, we understand the importance of not only having a seat at the table but ensuring that all women—especially those who have been historically excluded—have the space, voice, and power to lead. We are honored to stand alongside Freedom Fighting Missionaries in this work. #HopeIsADiscipline #StrategicImpact #FreedomFightingMissionaries #SpringwellSupports #WomenOwned #WomenLeadTheMovement
