In the United States, it has been noted that around 50% of female homicide victims were killed by an intimate partner, and many of these cases occurred during or shortly after the victim attempted to leave the relationship. In cases involving human trafficking, that percentage is increased. It’s not just by luck someone made it out, it’s actually a miracle and their chances of making it out and survival sometimes are gifted by strangers like you and me. The chances traffickers are put behind bars also increase while victims are assisted and HSI works hard on these cases. When we choose to lean in, understand, and offer a chance in this level of support, it makes a difference. When we were kids, just 12/13 years old, I had a friend. She lived in a single family home and things were though. She would run away often and self harmed. I would visit her and she would have “modeling” pictures in her room, saying her mom would make her do that to help out. The pictures were inappropriate given her age. To me as a child looking at them, it was as if I was looking at adult pictures, thinking how grown up they made her look in them (kids point of view). I remember asking her, “do you like being a model”. She would say no, she hated to have to go and she doesn’t get any sleep. I remember how tired and malnutrished she was. In my mind at the time, I attributed it to substance use. We had all come from dysfunctional homes. Her life continued on a darker path into more exploitation as an adult. In all honesty, I’m not really sure if she is alive today. Looking back, I realize today she was also a victim of familial trafficking. This is more common then people are willing to see.
