Grandfather lessons for the office. My 10 month old grandson, who I have the privilege of doing daycare three days a week for, loves when I sit near him while he plays. He doesn’t necessarily need me to play with him, he just needs to know I am there. Leason#1: Leaders need to be seen. Employees need to know your available if needed and that you care that they are there. My grandson loves to crawl into my lap every now and then. He doesn’t need a reason, and neither do I. Lesson#2: leaders need to be accessible when their employees need to talk. My grandson can’t talk yet, but he sure babbles a lot! And he loves when I engage him with my eyes and repeat his babbles back to him (it’s kinda fun). Lesson#3: when your employee is talking to you they need your undivided attention. Repeating back to them what they say reinforces that you are paying attention. If I am not paying attention he starts squirming and stands up in my lap and does his version of pointing. Lesson#4: I was just listening this morning to someone telling me how tone deaf their boss was in a recent meeting, because she wasn’t really listening to his concerns. He didn’t point, but updated his resume. Don’t get to the point that they squirm right out of your company. #leadership
关于我们
Free Geek Twin Cities (FGTC) is dedicated to addressing digital inclusion and electronic waste issues through direct, local, community-driven action. There are still many people in our community that do not have access to computers and the Internet, or do not possess the skills to adequately leverage these technologies. There are many reasons for this gap in our population, but one of our main goals is to alleviate this problem through work and education. Volunteers work in programs where they gain skills on how to use, build, and understand computers, and in the process earn a free computer. With the rapid growth of technology, our community has created large quantities of electronic waste. FGTC accepts this waste and its first goal is to reuse this material and refurbish it into a new computer to give to volunteers or to sell in our thrift store. It is not always possible to reuse all the materials we get, so we are dedicated to recycling those materials in a way that is both environmentally and socially friendly.

I had the pleasure of being a part of three UofM students' capstone project on Monday, along with Stevie from Free Geek Twin Cities, a local Minneapolis ewaste collector and refurbisher. Its great to see students connecting the dots between ewaste, climate change, and environmental justice!
