At around 2 a.m. on Friday, September 13th, a fire broke out outside of our receiving and recycling area, burning down part of our donation center and dumpsters. All staff, volunteers, and community members are safe, but we are closing Free Geek until air quality in the rest of our building improves and we repair the part of the donation center that was damaged. We will update the community via social media and our newsletter. In the meantime, Free Geek will be closed until further notice. Free Geek relies on community technology donations and monetary contributions to keep our reuse and recycling operations thriving. We are looking to raise $25,000 to support repairs, pay staff affected by our closure, and replace equipment. For more information, reach out to us at [email protected] and to make a donation, please donate at give.freegeek.org.
关于我们
Free Geek’s mission is to sustainably reuse technology, enable digital access, and provide education to create a community that empowers people to realize their potential. -- Technology is rapidly changing. Computers, monitors, printers, and other electronics are all being replaced every few years. The resulting electronic waste — referred to as e-waste — is the fastest growing toxic waste stream in the United States. According to the EPA, roughly 2.4 million tons of e-waste are created each year. Free Geek is where retired electronic devices can find new life. Free Geek staff and volunteers work hard to refurbish the electronics we receive. We maintain strict data security standards when processing any data-bearing devices that pass through our facility. By choosing us as your e-cycler, your electronics will be properly disposed, or given back to the community through our digital inclusion programs.
