After abdominal pain led her to the ER at the hospital where she works, Bekah Kooy, a general surgery physician assistant at UW Medicine – Northwest, was diagnosed with a rare form of colon cancer. “I had just had twins three years prior, and I was otherwise completely healthy,” Kooy said. “It came out of the blue — I had no prior pain, no blood in my stool, I wasn’t anemic. For years, I had felt exceedingly fatigued, but I was a mom of three young children who worked full-time. I attributed my exhaustion to being a woman.” Read more: https://bit.ly/3DWuekz

Fred Hutch was well represented at the #ACHECongress! Check out these highlights from Fred Hutch's Chief Nursing Officer Denene Prophet Williams MBA, MLA, RN, NE-BC, CENP.
So thrilled to be in attendance at the #ACHECongress, which has taken place in my very own hometown of Houston! This experience has been nothing short of extraordinary! From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the wisdom shared by Brene Brown, whose impactful messages have truly resonated with me. It has also been a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with so many cherished friends and colleagues, celebrating their remarkable achievements and milestones. Our attendance at various events and gatherings have fostered a sense of camaraderie, filled with laughter and shared experiences that remind us of our collective strength. The 2025 Congress has arrived at a pivotal time for all of us—it feels like exactly what we needed to be inspired and to recharge. Now, as we return to our roles, let’s be sure to implement the invaluable lessons we’ve learned. Our health care systems and organizations are relying on our commitment and innovation. Together, we can drive meaningful change in our industry! #HealthcareLeadership #Networking #ProfessionalDevelopment

Throughout its 50-year history, Fred Hutch has distinguished itself as a leader in the study of viruses, cancer-causing viral infections and infectious diseases, especially during the pandemic when as many as 20% of Fred Hutch researchers had active projects related to COVID-19 and the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes it. Two of those researchers — virologist Keith Jerome, MD, PhD, and evolutionary biologist Jesse Bloom, PhD — were recently elected to the 2025 class of fellows of the American Academy of Microbiology.
