Currently, only 10% to 15% of all eligible people in the U.S. have been screened for lung cancer. Additionally, many who are screened do not return for necessary follow-up screenings. Fred Hutch pulmonologist and public health researcher Dr. Matty Triplette and others are trying to change that: https://bit.ly/44DGJJ0 #lungcancerscreeningday

?? Mission: All Systems Go! ?? For the past two years, Fred Hutch - Proton Therapy and NASA's SCaN (Space Communications and Navigation) team have been working together to create an inspiring new program to help young patients facing cancer treatment. The program features a briefing video narrated by NASA astronaut Dr. Kjell Lindgren, a specially-designed space-themed room, and even an astronaut-themed "graduation certificate" to celebrate each patient's treatment journey. ?? Inspired by a child's comparison of the proton therapy gantry to a spaceship, Seattle Children's anesthesiologist Dr. Corrie Anderson teamed up with NASA to create an experience that turns a challenging time into an exciting, empowering adventure. Patients are now treated like astronauts on their own space mission – complete with a mission-ready environment, a space playlist, and progress trackers. ??? Dr. Lindgren shared, “As a NASA astronaut, I’m thrilled to encourage patients, showing them how my spaceflight training has similarities to their treatment journey, and that they, too, can successfully complete their ‘mission.’” Learn more: https://bit.ly/3Yyw4yi

“Storytelling is not exclusive to Native American people,” said artist, storyteller and Lower Elwha S’Klallam Tribe member Roger Fernandes. “It’s a universal human process of sharing, teaching, learning and understanding. We have all these new technologies, but we are still human. We still respond to stories. Giving people more data, more research, more reports — it’s all good but it’s the wrong foundation. You need to give people stories that generate belief, that tap into their spirit. Stories are still critical to human beings, and stories and art and ceremonies need to be integrated into a package as a way to help people address cancer.” Fernandes is the featured Indigenous artist for the second installation of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center’s Public Art and Community Dialogue Program, sponsored by the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Core (DEI) department.
