Welcome to Our Story.

关于我们

In significant ways, the history of our community is the history of our nation. For the past 25 years, it has been the privilege and the responsibility of the FAM to be the steward of this defining parcel of American history. The FAM is a vital cultural center and economic engine for Historic Downtown Fredericksburg. Preserving our history, interpreting our cultural heritage, building community—all of these are at the heart of the mission of the FAM. The Museum has attracted thousands of visitors to the Historic District with its exhibitions, educational programs, and summer concert series. Our vision is to serve our diverse community and its neighbors through a commitment to inclusion, integrity, credibility, and relevance. We will be an institution that facilitates the recognition and understanding of the region’s nation-shaping history through exploration of our past, illumination of the present, and visioning of the future.

  • For this #CollectionsTuesday during #WomensHistoryMonth, we’re highlighting a WWII artifact that showcases the vital contributions of women on the home front. Women played a vital role in supporting the war effort, from volunteering and nursing to organizing supplies and supporting families at home while men were overseas. One way they contributed was through the U.S. Citizens Service Corps, a program that mobilized civilians on the home front. This card belonged to Mrs. Virginia D. (Dameron) Gibson, who served as a Block Leader in Fredericksburg. Her role involved organizing scrap drives, coordinating childcare networks, planning events, and arranging blood donation drives, ensuring her community stayed informed and engaged in the war effort. These initiatives not only provided essential support but also helped communities stay prepared for emergencies, learning valuable skills like first aid and gardening. Gift of Courtney G. Pelley. #visitFAM #FAMCollections #WWIIHistory #FredericksburgHistory

  • ?? Happy Women’s History Month! ?? This #CollectionsTuesday we’re kicking off the month by diving into the archives! This 1927 photograph captures a moment from the parade and pageant celebrating the opening of Jefferson Davis Highway (now Emancipation Highway). Among the many organizations present were those from Fredericksburg State Teachers College, proudly wearing their uniforms. Originally founded as the Fredericksburg State Normal and Industrial School for Women, the college changed its name in 1924 to comply with state legislation and to better reflect its mission of preparing dedicated educators. Despite challenges, these teachers shaped generations of students, leaving a lasting impact on our community. Today, this institution is known as the University of Mary Washington. Gift of Mary Washington College. #WomensHistoryMonth #FAMArchives #visitFAM #FredericksburgHistory
