The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena, Germany, conducts applied research in the field of photonics and develops innovative optical systems to control light – from the generation and manipulation to its application. The services offered by the Institute covers the entire photonic process chain from opto-mechanical and opto-electronic system design to manufacturing of custom-specific solutions and prototypes. Current focuses of our research activities include freeform technologies, micro- and nanotechnologies, fiber laser systems and optical technologies for safe human-machine interaction or quantum technologies.

Researchers from our institute have published an article in Inspect America Magazine about their GOBO technology - considered a game-changer in 3D sensing and metrology. The presented method outperforms previous systems in terms of speed, accuracy, and robustness. Developed in collaboration with Volkswagen AG, the systems goSPE3D and goCRASH3D are opening up application potentials in fields like automotive safety, industrial manufacturing, and even medicine and forensics. The GOBO technology enables high-speed, precise measurements without object preparation, transforming dynamic applications like crash tests and airbag analysis. Thereby enabling new insights into processes that were previously difficult or impossible to measure. ?goCRASH3D will be presented at the SPIE Photonics West 2025. Launched to map the positions, distances, movements, and many features of celestial bodies in our galaxy, Gaia has created the most detailed map of the Milky Way – our cosmic home. ?? One of the key instruments aboard the spacecraft is the “Radial Velocity Spectrometer.” Researchers at Fraunhofer IOF, in collaboration with the Institute for Applied Physics, developed a crucial component – a transmission grid for measuring redshift. This instrument has successfully endured extreme conditions, and with the data collected has fundamentally expanded our knowledge of the Milky Way. For the coming weeks, various technology tests are planned, before Gaia enters its “retirement” orbit. Exciting times for secure communication using quantum cryptography! ?? Next stage of #QuNET key experiments: Last year, an optical connection between an aircraft and a mobile ground station was successfully established. This year, the tests will continue. The aim is then to couple an airborne quantum state with an ion trap.     LASEROPTISCHER KANAL ZWISCHEN FORSCHUNGSFLUGZEUG UND BODENSTATION - Vorbereitung für sichere Kommunikation durch Quantenkryptografie ? #QuNET entwickelt hochsichere Kommunikationssysteme auf der Grundlage der neuesten Entwicklungen in der Quantenkommunikation. Ein weiterer Schritt auf diesem Weg waren die Experimente im Rahmen einer Flugkampagne in Oberpfaffenhofen Ende des letzten Jahres. Dabei konnte erfolgreich eine optische Verbindung – also eine Verbindung über Laserstrahlen – zwischen einem Flugzeug und einer mobilen Bodenstation aufgebaut werden. In diesem Jahr werden die Tests fortgesetzt. Ziel ist es dann, einen durch die ?Luft?übertragenen Quantenzustand – hier also die Lichtteilchen – mit einer Ionenfalle zu koppeln. ? Die #QuNET-Initiative ist ein Pilotprojekt des Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) zur Erforschung hochsicherer Quantenkommunikation im europ?ischen Raum. Sie wird vom Fraunhofer IOF, Jena geleitet.
