If we can get our deficits back down to 3% of GDP, this is the level that Ray Dalio predicts will help us get back on track. Excerpt from his new book below: "The budget deficit should be cut to 3% of GDP (from what it is currently projected to be by the CBO, about 6% of GDP), and These cuts can come from 3 sources (spending cuts, tax increases, and interest rate cuts, with interest rate cuts being the most impactful). If the president and those in Congress agree that they need to do that, and they agree on a bipartisan backstop approach to doing that , they will achieve the goal of greatly reducing the odds of the US government going broke." Last month the SEC reversed the accounting rule that was keeping banks from participating in crypto services. This month DOGE and Elon Musk have announced a planned audit of the SEC. It will be interesting to see what we discover about the 2023 Bank Failures and the back room discussions opposing blockchain investments. Did the government put its thumb on the scale and contribute to the failure of Signature Bank and Silvergate Bank? Many believe that these banks could have easily been saved but were allowed to fail because of significant exposure to cryptocurrency and how they were enabling onramps for DeFi Investments. Everyone's talking about Tarriffs but not much about previous ways the government looked to Maximize Tax Revenue, In the 1980s, Ronald Reagan turned to Art Laffer and the Laffer curve. Most people refer to the point at the Apex of the curve which maximizes revenue in the short run. But if we set the tax rate to maximize growth, the tax revenue may be even higher in the long run. Higher tax rates do not necessarily kill initiative to work, but they definitely increase the initiative to move away and find novel ways to reduce those tax burdens. What about Share Repurchases and Apple Stock? Buffett stopped repurchasing shares of Berkshire Hathaway in the 3rd Quarter of 2024. Berkshire briefly dipped below $410 in August of 2024, yet Buffett still didn't buy back any shares. Buffett will likely not buy back Berkshire shares unless we see a pullback of 20% or more in the share price. ALSO As Apple Computer has reached new all time highs it's worthy to note that Buffett has not sold additional shares. With Apple now comprising over 28% of the Berkshire Portfolio (down from over 50% in 2023), Buffett seems to be content with this level of exposure.
