The FDC board approved several new projects at the February 25 board meeting. The first is this beautiful mid century modern building on North Jackson that will become the home of Bud and Bloom Florist. We love seeing new businesses come to our downtown!

Franklin is growing intentionally. We are not losing our history and not stopping progress. Both objectives can be achieved at the same time with smart planning and awareness of opportunities. The FDC works to maintain both objectives with each project we undertake.
Every city manager has heard it…some version of “we don’t want to be like those big cities” or “we need to protect our small-town feel.” It’s usually said by people who resist growth, fight change, and cling to an image of the past that no longer exists. That mindset is killing cities. Nostalgia is not a development strategy. It doesn’t fund infrastructure, recruit businesses, or create jobs. It doesn’t fill the staffing gaps in public safety, keep housing affordable, or sustain a tax base that allows a community to thrive. Cities evolve. They have to. The ones that don’t end up hollowed-out relics, watching their young people leave, their economies stagnate, and their tax burden shift onto fewer and fewer people. But here’s where many cities get it wrong…growth doesn’t mean abandoning identity. Smart cities don’t just expand. They grow with intentionality. They understand that progress and preservation are not opposites. A city’s character isn’t found in its refusal to change, it’s found in the way it guides that change. Identity isn’t something you freeze in time, it’s something you protect by planning for the future on purpose. Fighting progress doesn’t stop change, it just makes it chaotic and unsustainable. The real challenge isn’t whether a city grows, it’s how it grows. Do you let change happen to you, or do you shape it? Do you allow sprawl to choke out what makes a city special, or do you plan for responsible, sustainable development that keeps the community strong, livable, and financially stable? The cities that thrive aren’t the ones that spend decades trying to preserve what they were. They’re the ones with leaders and residents who have the vision and courage to shape what they will be. If your city is more concerned with holding onto the past than planning for the future, don’t be surprised when it has neither. #CityManagement #SmartGrowth #EvolveWithPurpose #FutureOfCities #PublicServiceMatters #LocalGovernmentLeadership #SustainableCommunities #IntentionalGrowth #IdentityAndProgress #PublicAdministration #LocalGovernment #PreservationAndProgress #CityLeadership #EconomicDevelopment

This is why our work is so important. Several of these businesses were recipients of our programs and we are delighted to share their success. While we gave them a piece of the puzzle, they put it all together!
In Franklin, we don’t just talk about community; we live it ????? #genuinefranklin #franklinCoC #franklinindiana

The FDC has partnered with Discover Downtown Franklin and Festival Country to bring First Fridays to downtown Franklin. Any downtown business that participates in 8 out of the 10 event is eligible for a drawing to receive a grant to add improvements to the outside of their shop. Think benches, flower pots, window treatments etc. This continues our mission of restoring and maintaining a vibrant downtown for our residents and our guests. Come visit Franklin the first Friday of every month and see the magic for yourself!
