Each year, the annual meeting of the International Society for Autism Research, INSAR attracts the best and brightest autism researchers from around the globe to learn the latest in autism research and collaborate to create a better future for everyone affected by autism. Franciscan Children’s is proud to have had our Chief Behavioral Health Officer, Matthew Siegel, MD, MBA, not only attend this prestigious gathering, but also deliver a keynote address. “I am grateful to the INSAR board and my colleagues for the opportunity to give a keynote on Profound Autism at the 2024 INSAR Annual Meeting,” said Dr. Siegel. The INSAR Annual Meeting is the largest gathering of autism researchers and their trainees in the world. More than 1,300 individuals gathered in Melbourne, Australia, May 15-18, for the conference. Dr. Siegel represented both Franciscan Children’s and Boston Children’s Hospital at the event. His keynote centered on people with Profound Autism, a population he has worked with for nearly 20 years. “This conference is likely a turning point for how people think about the autism spectrum,” said Dr. Siegel. “While everyone on the spectrum matters, those with the most significant challenges – those who are minimally verbal, have lower IQ or have need for support with daily living skills – need increased attention, research focus and support.” Dr. Siegel presented the Autism Inpatient Collection, which is a multi-site research project he has led for the past decade. His team has created a large database of clinical and genetic data on more than 1,500 children with autism, more than 70% of whom are in the Profound Autism category. Dr. Siegel is excited to report this data resource will be made available to all investigators worldwide by the end of 2024 through the Simons Foundation. “More than 40 publications have been spawned from this data, and it is just the beginning,” he said.
