Whether through innovative teaching methods, cultural exchanges, or simply sharing their love for the language, French teachers play a vital role in promoting multilingualism and cultural understanding. ?? Celebrating World Language Day at Georgia State University ??? Yesterday, I had the honor of participating in World Language Day at Georgia State University, a vibrant celebration of the power and potential of multilingualism. Engaging with students, teachers, educators, and language enthusiasts was truly inspiring, as we explored how world languages, especially French, connect cultures, open doors to global opportunities, and shape the future. The discussions were rich and the commitment to fostering linguistic and cultural exchange was undeniable. It was a great opportunity to showcase Villa Albertine, the French Institute for Culture and Education programs and initiatives to support French education across the U.S and especially the Southeast. Such events remind us of the importance of nurturing language programs and creating opportunities for students to thrive in a globalized world. A big thank you to Georgia State University for hosting such an impactful event and to everyone who stopped by to share ideas, collaborate, and celebrate language learning. Last week, Consul General Anne-Laure Desjonquères had the privilege of awarding the French Legion of Honor, France's highest distinction, to 105-year-old #WWII veteran Roscoe Lee Joyner in recognition of his role in the liberation of France ???????? Mr. Joyner landed in #Normandy on August 7, 1944, joining the 203rd Field Artillery Group with General Patton's Third U.S. Army. ?? Reflecting on the Impact of the #Olympics, #Urbanism, and #Migration with #Marseille Historians For the final week of #FranceAtlanta2024, we had the privilege of hosting renowned Marseille historians Stéphane Mourlane and Céline Regnard for a week of insightful conversations, part of the #CityCité Atlanta x Marseille transatlantic cooperation program by Villa Albertine, the French Institute for Culture and Education. As the Paris Olympics wrap up and with just two years until the World Cup and the 30th anniversary of the 1996 #Atlanta Olympics, 2024 offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the enduring legacies of these iconic Games—particularly in terms of urban development, migration, and social transformation. We kicked off the week on Monday, Oct. 28 with a captivating lecture by Stéphane Mourlane at Emory University’s Department of Art History. His talk, “Olympic Games and Urban Transformation (1896—2024)” explored how the Games have reshaped cities over the last century. The next day, on Tuesday, Oct. 29, Mourlane joined the quarterly Atlanta Studies Meetup alongside local experts Mike Carnathan and Bem Joiner. His presentation delved into the complex urban, social, and environmental impacts of hosting the Games. On Thursday, Oct. 31, Stéphane Mourlane and Céline Regnard led an engaging session for architecture and design students at Georgia Tech College of Design discussing “Immigration in Marseille: Urban Heritage and Issues of Postcolonial Design.” To close out the week, on Friday, Nov. 1, Céline Regnard shared her extensive research on postcolonial issues and immigration in Marseille with students at Emory University’s Department of French and Italian, offering a powerful lens on the city’s evolving identity.
