Anhedonia, the inability to anticipate or experience pleasure, can emerge during adolescence and often precedes the onset of more severe psychopathology such as mood disorders and psychosis. FPG Faculty Fellow Aysenil Belger and colleague Danielle Roubinov, an associate professor in the UNC DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY, will lead an innovative study of the predictors of anhedonia in young people. #psychiatry #childdevelopment

Executive functions play a role in future academic achievement, interpersonal skills, and emotion regulation. To understand how to best measure these skills in young children, FPG Advanced Research Scientist Laura Kuhn and colleagues compared three performance-based measures of executive functions that have been developed for preschoolers. The results of that work were published in “A Comparison of Three Executive Function Batteries in a Preschool-Aged Sample." #ExecutiveFunction #Research

FPG Faculty Fellow Kara Hume has merged her passion for exercise and supporting neurodivergent communities by building a fitness program for people of varying abilities.
After working with the autism community for over 30 years, Kara Hume is building a fitness program for people of varying abilities. https://lnkd.in/e7ZfHPpW An autism researcher within the UNC School of Education, Hume and her colleagues have conducted two of the largest school-based studies on autistic students and have sorted through thousands of articles on the topic to help teachers and families identify successful interventions. During the pandemic, they developed COVID-related resources for families that have been downloaded more than 300,000 times.? ? Hume is also a fitness fanatic and has merged her passion for exercise and supporting neurodivergent communities over the years. She’s gone whitewater rafting with children with disabilities, rock-climbed with students at an alternative school, and since 2018 has helped coach an adaptive CrossFit class for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Now, the class, called Power Hour, is part of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) project focused on promoting healthy aging and the physical and mental health of adults with intellectual disabilities. “We hear from people all the time that Power Hour is making a difference for them, but we’ve never been able to prove it through research,” Hume says. “And now we’ll be able to study it in a much more systematic way, looking at health metrics and quality of life.” #UNCResearch #fitness #autism #neurodivergent #crossfit #educaton #unc #research #gdtbath
