The Evolution of AI Reasoning: Are we approaching #AGI? One of the most exciting frontiers in #AI today isn’t just making models bigger by dumping data—it’s making them think better. DeepSeek AI R1-zero is an experiment in just that: inducing reasoning purely through reinforcement learning (RL), without supervised fine-tuning. The model learns by rewarded strictly for correctness. The result? A model that teaches itself how to think. #DeepSeek R1 was even better, it fixed the problems of language mixing, poor formatting, and a lack of coherence in its reasoning tokens. This was done with 4 key stages of training: 1?? Cold Start: A small, high-quality dataset (thousands of samples) teaches the model to format its reasoning clearly. 2?? RL for Reasoning: Same reward-based learning as R1-zero but with a small incentive for using a single language. 3?? Rejection Sampling & SFT: Generate multiple reasoning samples, select the best, and fine-tune. 4?? RL for Alignment: Combine reasoning RL with standard human preference rewards and safety evaluations. The result? ? Stronger math reasoning (outperforms OpenAI models) ? Better English comprehension than most commercial models ? Significant improvements in Chinese language capabilities ? Slightly weaker coding performance compared to OpenAI The Bigger Picture: Reasoning can happen without a massive dataset of human-annotated CoT examples. This reduces the cost of training advanced reasoning models. What this means: ?? Lower data requirements for reasoning models → More efficient AI development ??
