Honoring The Old Guard’s WWII Legacy During World War II (1941-1945), the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) played a vital role in the Anzio and Rome-Arno campaigns, pushing through the rugged terrain of Italy to help liberate Europe from Axis control. Their sacrifices contributed to the larger Allied strategy, paving the way for the final push into Nazi-occupied territory. By 1945, as Generals Eisenhower, Patton, and Patch met in Lunéville, France, to discuss the closing stages of the war, the men of The Old Guard stood as part of the force that had fought tirelessly across Europe.
