Foundation for Women Warriors

In 1918, the U.S. Army Signal Corps sent 223 women to France as telephone operators to help win the Great War. They swore Army oaths, wore uniforms, held rank, and were subject to military justice. By war’s end, they had connected over 26 million calls and were recognized by General John J. Pershing for their service. When they returned home, the U.S. government told them they were never soldiers. Absolutely amazing and exhilarating—that’s how I’d describe the past two days! After four months of virtual instruction, I finally had the chance to meet the 18 incredible women veterans in my 2024 Women Veterans Lead cohort, hosted by the Foundation for Women Warriors. We dove into skills for transitioning from the military, building a strong network, and embracing future leadership roles and spaces we have earned to be in post military. On top of that, we attended the annual Fortune Most Powerful Women summit, where I had the honor of having private discussions with six inspiring corporate women leaders who shared their strategies and pathways to earning their leadership roles in Fortune recognized companies. I’m humbled to be part of this cohort, honored to attend such a prestigious event, and more committed than ever to building a meaningful network as I navigate life after the military. Happy 249th Birthday US Navy! ? On October 13th, 1775, the Second Continental Congress established a small naval fleet of privateers with the goal of disrupting British sea power. During World War II, the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) played a crucial role in the U.S. Navy, with over 100,000 women stepping into roles such as cryptographers, radio operators, and air traffic controllers. WAVES marked a turning point for women in the military, allowing them to contribute directly to the war effort in ways previously reserved for men.
