Today on Vietnam War Veterans Day, we honor the service and sacrifice of those who braved the battlefield—and those who fought to save lives. Lieutenant Virginia Dornheggen, a U.S. Army nurse, faced the unthinkable when the Viet Cong launched a brutal attack near the 67th Evacuation Hospital. Amid shattered windows and deafening explosions, she ran toward danger, not away from it. “The pandemonium jolted me back to reality. I grabbed my flak jacket and sprinted to the Intensive Care Unit. Were the enemy already inside our perimeter, AK-47s in hand, bayonets fixed? It didn’t matter. My mission was clear — Protect the soldiers in my care. They came first, no matter what.” -Lt. Virginia Dornheggen After the war, Dornheggen continued her service as a critical care and home-health nurse, carrying the weight of memories and the names of those she couldn’t save. Today, we remember her courage and the sacrifices of all Vietnam veterans. “I like to think I helped prove that women can contribute more to national defense than just waiting for the war to end.” Electrician First Class Myrtle Rae Holthaus Hazard (1892 – 1951) made history in 1918 when she accidentally walked into Coast Guard Headquarters on her way to a job interview, becoming the first woman to enlist in the United States Coast Guard. After overcoming polio and balancing motherhood with taking night classes, Hazard found herself in the right place at the right time, qualified and ready to serve. Her vital contributions during WWI paved the way for women in the Coast Guard, yet her obituary neglected to mention her military service. Today, Hazard's legacy is honored with a Coast Guard Fast Response Cutter named in her memory. “I’m running to revisit a part of my young adult life that was so very important to me.?I once ran a marathon and often ran 10 miles or 10 kilometers “for fun”, but my knees and other joints no longer allow me to keep up with my pace from the “good old days”, so now I’m far more likely to run/walk (usually walk) with my dog—often on grass rather than pavement.?My 5K time has pretty close to doubled, but at 67, I’m still out there moving and don’t plan to give up soon!?I’m a staunch believer in the old saying, “Use it or lose it”!” -Michelle Lewis, Virtual 5K participant Still itching to celebrate women’s history this month? On #NationalMedalofHonorDay, we honor Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, the only woman to have received the Medal of Honor. A pioneering U.S. Army surgeon, women’s rights advocate, abolitionist, and spy, Walker defied societal expectations by dedicating her life to medicine and service. As the first female U.S. Army surgeon during the Civil War, she crossed battle lines to care for soldiers and civilians. In 1864, she was captured as a spy by Confederate troops and held as a prisoner of war for four months, but her indomitable spirit never wavered. Lieutenant Susan Ahn Cuddy shattered barriers as a pioneering figure in the U.S. Navy. Inspired by her father, a Korean independence activist, and driven by the attack on Pearl Harbor, she joined the WAVES in 1942, becoming the first Asian American woman in the program. Despite facing racism and sexism, she excelled, becoming the Navy’s first female gunnery officer, training naval aviators in air combat tactics. She later broke new ground as the first Asian American woman in naval intelligence and went on to serve as a codebreaker and section chief at the NSA during the Cold War.
