?? ?? ?????? ???? ?????????????? ???? ?? ?????? ???? ??????????????! As India's innerwear exports witness a decline, it is important to look at our high tariff and non-tariff barriers on imports that price us out of the global market. "On trade, high tariff and non-tariff barriers on the import of raw materials make it costlier to produce and export garments from India, thereby pricing us out of the global market. It is imperative to address this, as labour-intensive merchandise exports remain the only reliable lever for India to achieve developed country status by 2047,": Mihir Parekh, Associate Partner at Foundation For Economic Development told Mint. ?? While states such as Assam continue to attract investment in high-end manufacturing sectors such as semiconductors, there is a need to prioritise industries that generate large-scale employment, explains Ronak Pol, Team Lead at Foundation For Economic Development. “A thriving manufacturing base will provide young Indians with the economic security and upward mobility essential for sustained growth and prosperity”, he tells Business Standard. "Trump favours tariffs to counter unfair trade practices. Since the US is a key strategic partner, fair trade measures are in our interest," Rahul Ahluwalia, Director at Foundation For Economic Development tells Dhirendra Kumar of Mint. As India reportedly re-assesses the potential impact of its ecommerce policy in the wake of Trump's re-election, there may be some scope to take advantage of the situation. “We should ease outdated foreign exchange rules to benefit from the new Trump tariffs on China. Restrictions like the 25% discount cap for e-commerce exports and stringent invoice reconciliations make it hard for small businesses to grow," said Rahul Ahluwalia. ?? Around mid-December '24, we happened to look back on the volume of public-facing work that we'd put out through the year, and the idea of putting together the 'Best of FED'?dawned on us. December is pretty late to start work on a year-end magazine. We wanted to do it nonetheless, for?this magazine will sit on our desks/desktops (and hopefully yours), and continually remind all of us that economic?growth, measured in GDP,?is important! It's perhaps the most important thing for India today, because it brings with it everything else - women's labour force participation, improved nutrition, less stunting, reduced maternal mortality, more JOBS, and so much more - that we cherish and hold dear. This magazine features a collection of articles written by FED team members, looking at different sectors and debates that deserve primacy in India's growth story. Parallelly, we've collected some of our best data stories, which we feature every month in this newsletter.?These short, punchy combinations of stats and visuals underline FED's ideas for economic policymaking in a way that stays with you. We've also picked five of our best podcasts from last year, though we recommend just listening to the entire?playlist. We hope you enjoy this compilation, as we much as we did?putting it together for you. ?? ???? ???? ????????????????, ?????????? ???? ???? ???????????????????? ????????????. Almost in every sector, there's a globally competitive Indian firm exporting to the world. The problem is, we don't do it at scale. How do we get our export engine firing on all cylinders? Rahul Ahluwalia, Director at Foundation For Economic Development, discusses with The Secretariat. ?? Should "weak global demand" make us adjust our expectations about India's GDP growth. Foundation For Economic Development Director Rahul Ahluwalia points out that India's share of world merchandise exports is just 1.8%. Hence, the question shouldn't be about global demand, but about how India can expand its share of global exports. How do we do that? Follow this space for more such insights on economic growth. Agriculture is important but can’t be our growth engine anymore. The only way to meaningfully increase farmer income is by reducing the denominator and moving surplus to manufacturing and services.

Plenty of schemes and sops is how one may describe the outlay for agriculture in every Budget. But to really improve the lives of farmers and alleviate distress in the sector, we need to alter the incentives for farmers in a way that furthers international competitiveness and boosts exports.
