The Foundation Fighting Blindness has funded 35 new research grants in fiscal year 2024, strengthening blinding disease research with a record-breaking $19.8 million investment in innovative projects targeting vision loss worldwide. Within this year’s funding, the Foundation has renamed the Translational Research Acceleration Program to the David Brint Translational Research Program, in honor of David Brint, who served as Foundation board chair from 2016 to 2024. Nippon Shinyaku, a pharmaceutical company based in Kyoto, Japan, and Atsena Therapeutics, a developer of gene therapies for retinal diseases in Durham, North Carolina, have entered into a license agreement for the commercialization of ATSN-101, an emerging gene therapy for Leber congenital amaurosis 1 (LCA1) which is caused by mutations in the gene GUCY2D.
