Vargas is a Senior Program Advisor at the Department of Energy and the Director of DOE’s Better Buildings Initiative. Today we celebrated the progress Foundation Communities has made toward our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions at our affordable housing communities and offices in Austin and North Texas by 50 percent over 10 years. Foundation Communities has already achieved more than 36 percent emissions reduction using solar panels and other initiatives. The commitment is part of our involvement in the US Department of Energy's Better Climate Challenge. We appreciate Rep. Lloyd Doggett and officials with the US Departments of Energy and Housing and Urban Development for recognizing our progress, and for joining us on a tour of our Homestead Oaks Apartments.

Bluebonnet Studios was packed with creativity and fun today at our Art & Wellness event. This annual event is a chance for some of the talented artists living in our supportive housing communities for single adults to show off and sell their works of art. It's organized by our Health Initiatives and Supportive Housing teams. These are photos of the resident artists and their art. We also set the stage for musical artists. On a recent visit to our Cardinal Point Learning Center, volunteer Mark Westphal taught the students how to make pesto. Not just any pesto... they used basil from the garden he helped them plant this spring, and pistachios instead of pine nuts. We need more Learning Center volunteers.
