Nettie the giraffe turns 15 years old today! ???? Nettie was born right here at Fossil Rim, just two weeks before Snorgie, one of the other giraffes in the herd. Birthday fun fact: Do giraffes have horns or antlers? Neither! They are called ossicones, and they lay flat at birth, and as the giraffe grows, they harden into ossicones or bone-like structures. With males using them for fights over territory and both sexes for defense against predators. #giraffe #fossilrim #safaripark #wildlife

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center's cheetah breeding program began in 1985. ?? Since that time, we have managed hundreds of cheetahs and dedicated a lot of time to continue to learn and improve our management of this species. ?? Cheetahs are a very unique species and they require a lot of species-specific management, which makes them very challenging to work with. Over the last 39 years, we have worked with others in the cheetah community to advance husbandry through behavioral observation, research, and sharing information on our challenges/problems and all of our successes and failures. ?? Fossil Rim has long been one of the most successful breeding facilities in North America. Several factors have aided our success, including a large facility capable of housing a large collection of cheetahs, dedicated staff that care for the animals and advance husbandry, plus collaboration with other breeding centers to improve overall management for the greater good of cheetah conservation. ?? We play a large role in cheetah management in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) through our involvement in the Cheetah Species Survival Plan (SSP) and the Cheetah Breeding Center Coalition (BCC).
