?? Advocacy Update from Forum President & CEO Melissa Torres ?? The Department of State has not released any information regarding the temporary 15-day pause that first began on February 12. The United States is hurting its own economic and national security interests by implementing this extraordinary freeze, which has yet to be lifted. If funding is not fully and immediately restored, businesses will find it harder to hire workers with global skills, the 3,500 Americans who are currently abroad on scholarships will be less safe, and the international education community’s ability to implement programs in the future will be irreparably harmed. Congress must follow through on the funding commitments they made if they want to preserve the future of America’s workforce and support student success. This week, it was also announced that the U.S. Education Department has also undergone significant staffing cuts, reducing its workforce by nearly 50%. This raises additional?concerns about the future of the department's ability to manage and distribute funding for education abroad effectively. It has come to our attention that the?entire International and Foreign Language Education (IFLE)?unit with the Office of Postsecondary Education has been eliminated. This could mean funding for FLAS scholarships, Area Studies Centers, and Centers for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) is at risk. These funding disruptions are creating significant challenges for both students and institutions involved in international education. The loss of support for key programs will impact faculty and administrators and the ability of many students to participate in global learning experiences. This setback could also have a ripple effect on the academic and professional partnerships that have been cultivated over years of effort. The Forum on Education Abroad team is actively monitoring these changes, and, at the same time, we are working with NAFSA, the Alliance, and policymakers to advocate for the restoration of these critical funding streams and to highlight the importance of international education for both individual students and the broader U.S. economy. We will continue to keep you informed about any developments as we strive to navigate this uncertain landscape. In the meantime, we encourage you to stay connected with us and explore local solutions and partnerships that can help sustain your education abroad initiatives.
