Bill Gates thinks the richest governments should increase their support for African countries that have been overshadowed by development funding increasingly going toward the humanitarian response to the?war in Ukraine?as well as?support for refugees?around the world in recent years. “There’s less money going to Africa at a time when they need it,” whether it’s for debt relief, vaccinations or to reduce malnutrition, Gates told The Associated Press in an interview. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is ordering employees to return to the office five days a week beginning in January. Amazon says they'll make exceptions for extenuating circumstances or cases where managers had already approved a fully remote position. Starbucks is creating a brand leader position as new CEO Brian Niccol seeks to revive the coffee chain’s sales and restore its cozy coffeehouse vibe. bit.ly/4d4sAsA In Niccol’s first major move since taking over, the company will create a global chief brand officer position. The role will oversee product, marketing, digital, customer insights, creative and store concepts. Young investment bankers starting off in the industry accept that to advance quickly in their career they must sacrifice much of their personal life, according to the CEO of a Wall Street bank Lazard. Speaking on?The David Rubenstein Show?on?Bloomberg, Lazard boss Peter Orszag said enough people were willing to make that sacrifice if they felt it gave them greater meaning and a sense of purpose. The opportunity to go as far as you can as fast as you can—even at the cost of losing your weekends—was, to many, more alluring than a 9-5 office job full of boring busy work. On the contrary, we've set forward a measured set of recommendations–agreed upon by the highest levels of MSFT leadership–asking Microsoft to live up to their stated values and partner with the industry to phase down #fossilfuel production and enable a holistic and inclusive #energytransition, prioritizing the needs of the most vulnerable. ? 4?? This is about the tech sector as a whole, NOT just Microsoft (although Microsoft is by far the largest & most aggressive). Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, and Meta, we’re looking at you, too ??. This will require sector-wide coordination. ? While the world is beginning to look at the environmental impacts of the development of AI (i.e. #datacenter energy use), the applications of that AI technology are orders of magnitude more destructive, and Microsoft is going all in, with efforts now supercharged by #GenerativeAI. For all the progress women have made in the workplace, the U.S. is still far, far from reaching parity—about half a century away, in fact, according to the new?Women in the Workplace report?from Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In and McKinsey & Company. The 10th anniversary of the report analyzed data from the past decade to get a sense of what is truly changing in workplace culture—and what isn’t. The report is a fascinating look at how diversity efforts have stalled at many companies. Women still report being talked over, having their judgment questioned, and getting less support from their managers. Women of color, in particular, report that they are still getting fewer opportunities. But all of that underscores one of the biggest takeaways from the survey, Sandberg says: just how fragile the corporate pipeline is.
