In the conservative political landscape there is a growing tension between international ideological alliances and national interest. This seems problematic especially in light of the alleged patriotism of the so-called “new right”. What comes first? Country or ideological tribe? Some remarks from New Direction's Academy in #Dublin ????

Some takeaways of my opening speech at New Direction’s Academy in #Dublin ???? on the fundamentals of #Conservatism. I was honoured to share a panel discussion with Ferenc H?rcher and James Orr, masterfully moderated by John O'Sullivan. 1. Liberty and Conservatism: ?? Need for a distinct conservative definition of liberty. ?? Tension between “freedom from” (negative liberty) and “freedom for” (positive liberty). ?? Liberty seen not just as an end, but as a means towards a common good or telos. ?? Challenge of defining acceptable conceptions of the good life in pluralistic societies. 2. Authority and Liberty: ?? Conservatives face a dilemma between institutional capture (as the political left has done) and maintaining neutrality. ?? Balancing authority and personal freedom, especially as conservatives gain political ground. ?? Conservatives are very good at the defensive, but perform very poorly at the offensive. 3. National vs. International Conservatism: ?? Growing tension between national conservatism and the broader international conservative movement. ?? Conflicts between national interests and ideological commitments to the global conservative network. 4. Definition of Conservatism: ?? Conservatism defined as an attitude or incomplete ethics, not as a comprehensive ideology. ?? Risk of conservatism becoming an ideology, which could harm the political discourse in a polarized environment. 5. Populism and Conservatism: ?? Passion is fundamental to conservatism, but should not be reduced to populism, which dominates current conservative movements. 6. Anglo-Centric View of Conservatism: ?? The Anglo-centric perspective of conservatism is limiting. ?? Need to include other traditions, particularly the Hispanic tradition, to address the balance between authority and liberty. 7. Reconciliation of Traditions: ?? The Anglo-Saxon tradition emphasizes negative freedom, risking anarchy without moral authority. ?? The Hispanic tradition emphasizes authority but may lack space for personal freedom. ?? Need for reconciliation between these traditions in modern conservative thought. #Conservatism #PoliticalThought
