Karen Human Rights Group's new report, “?????????? Aircraft Coming!” presents the widespread impacts of Myanmar military airstrikes across Southeast Myanmar since the 2021 coup. Between February 2021 and June 2024, their team documented 227 incidents of airstrikes across seven districts in Karen State, 41% of which were conducted in 2024 alone. The group calls on the international community to impose an embargo on military supplies, including aviation fuel, and implement further targeted sanctions on oil and gas revenues and against junta officials to undermine their ability to fund attacks on civilians. NEW??: Thailand should immediately withdraw the repressive NPO bill as its second iteration is now under review. If enacted, the draft law would “enable government officials to stifle civil and political rights,” said Matthew Smith, CEO at Fortify Rights. ? The draft NPO law would impose mandatory registration that bans unregistered groups. ? It would introduce strict reporting requirements, particularly on foreign funding, and grant the government significant authority to dissolve organizations for overly broad reasons. ? It would authorize the Ministry of Interior to conduct unannounced inspections of non-profit offices and records without a warrant, mandate extraneous reporting, and impose penalties, including prison terms. Such measures could be used as tools to harass and shut down non-profits. Read more here: https://bit.ly/NewNPOBill

Yesterday marked 1,000 days since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Fortify Rights is advocating for U.N. Member States to support the establishment of an ad hoc tribunal to hold Russia accountable for the crime of aggression.

NEW: Fortify Rights's investigation found Border Guard Bangladesh officers forcibly returned more than 400 Rohingya refugees to Myanmar since August 2024. The Interim Government of Bangladesh should immediately stop the forced return of refugees. “The interim government’s commitment to human rights should include protecting the rights of Rohingya who are fleeing genocidal violence in Myanmar. Bangladesh should allow Rohingya to cross safely into Bangladesh and formally recognize their rights as refugees,” said Zaw Win of Fortify Rights. https://bit.ly/BGLPushBack
