Forterra Nature Discovery?? adventurers recently gathered at Port Gamble’s Forest Heritage Park with binoculars, plant and animal ID books, and some cool phone apps.
The backdrop was fall-perfect on this weekend morning, with vine and big-leaf maples showering us in orange and yellow leaves that carpeted the forest floor.
Walking within beautiful second growth forest on the high Bluff Trail along the west side of Port Gamble Bay, we appreciated how critically important forests like this are to the health of salmon and shellfish.
Two hours breezed by, seeking out and identifying plants and trees. And the mushrooms! Some of us harvested these fall gems and swapped recipes. As we conversed about the variety of fish in the bay, we learned that some salmon will adopt a new stream if given the opportunity.
At nearly 4000 acres, this beautiful forest captures what we love most in the PNW. We spoke our appreciation for the thousands of dedicated people — Native American Tribes among them — whose patience and persistence prevailed over 10 years to protect these lands from being developed.
Home to fish, bear, coyote and endless birds species, there is amazing heart and soul in this landscape.
Thank you for supporting nature, Forterra, and the landscapes we all call home.
