The American Red Cross was founded after the Civil War and was instrumental in providing trained nurses to the military. Nursing was a male dominated field until the advancement of medical care and the needs of war created a demand for women to fill the role. Fort Monroe was an important site for medical care and thousands of nurses supported the recovery of soldiers during both world wars and later. #WomensHistoryMonth PC: Red Cross Workers in an office meeting at Fort Monroe, Virginia, c. 1941-1945. In honor of Women's History Month check out this great historical photo where Army spouses support soldiers and the larger community in which they reside. They formed wives’ clubs to create support programs and fundraised for special causes. The groups were an important part of keeping morale high and enabled them to support one another during deployments and in wartime. PC: Army Officer Wives [Mrs. Wyman, W.W. Gest, J.A. Sakas, F.H. ? Artifact Spotlight ? Take a look at these two fascinating ironstone pieces found at Fort Monroe, both originating from the British Alcock family who were producers and exporters of porcelain and whiteware. The piece on the has been part of our collection, believed to date back to the late 1800s. The piece on the right, however, was recently uncovered during the ongoing construction of the African Landing Memorial Plaza. ??? #artifacts #archeology
