Under the "Food, Water, Agriculture" thematic day at #COP29, I’m proud to share the latest progress on the Caribbean Climate-Smart Agriculture Pilot Project, an initiative led by the Caribbean Climate-Smart Accelerator in partnership with Walkers Reserve, Walkers Institute for Regenerative Research Education and Design, Fork Farms and Scotiabank Barbados: - Boosting production: Using Fork Farms’ innovative indoor hydroponic Flex Farms, the project produced an impressive 2,382 heads of leafy greens between January and June 2024. With 52% of the population in the English-speaking Caribbean facing food insecurity, this initiative provides fresh, nutritious, and locally-grown produce for vulnerable groups, including youth and women. - A 2-day workshop at Walkers Reserve, Barbados trained stakeholders in hydroponic farming technology. Participants included students, educators, farmers, public and private sector leaders, hoteliers, and restaurateurs. Together, they explored how this easily deployable technology can combat food insecurity and drive climate resilience. This initiative highlights how innovative, scalable solutions can enhance local food production and resilience across the Caribbean.
