A non-profit organization dedicated to relieving hunger and food insecurity in metro Detroit.
关于我们
Forgotten Harvest was formed in 1990 to fight two problems: hunger and waste. Forgotten Harvest “rescued” and distributed 40 million pounds of food last year by collecting surplus prepared and perishable food from 800 sources, including grocery stores, fruit and vegetable markets, restaurants, caterers, dairies, farmers, wholesale food distributors and other Health Department-approved sources. This donated food, which would otherwise go to waste, is delivered free-of-charge to more than 200 emergency food providers in the Metro Detroit area. Last week my team volunteered at Forgotten Harvest where we sorted 6,893lbs of reclaimed food from Kroger and repackaged 2,066lbs of chocolate candies for families across SE Michigan. It was extra fun because we made some new friends from Delta Dental of Michigan, including the team member who manages the Rocket account for our dental insurance! Special thanks to Rocket Community Fund for making this opportunity possible.

As families continue to grapple with the devastation of a massive water main break that flooded more than 150 homes and displaced dozens, community organizations are stepping up to help. Ford Philanthropy is among the various groups coordinating relief efforts with local nonprofits to provide essential support. Sandra Valle-Holdwick of Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development (LA SED) assists Shellisa Rigney of Southwest Detroit in loading her vehicle with food, alongside Noe Garza, outside the LA SED Senior and Youth Center. Rigney is among the many residents affected by the aftermath of the flooding. I wasn’t there long, but in that short time, I was able to capture the dedication of LA SED and Forgotten Harvest employees as they worked tirelessly to support families in need. Feed Your Neighborhood and Detroit Area Disaster Recovery Group partnered with Forgotten Harvest, MACK AVENUE COMMUNITY CHURCH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION, and Disaster Relief at Work, to gather resources to help with recovery for the Southwest Detroit flooding. Together we were able to gather over 300 boxes of food and 200 Disaster Relief at Work buckets to distribute to families affected by the flood. We are currently organizing with community organizations and groups so that these resources get to where they are needed most. We'd like to thank everyone who came out to help, it was great seeing so many hands working for one cause. Attached below is a news article that discusses the flood recovery and the event we hosted on Friday.

What's the COOLEST thing at CHMI? Our new refrigerator from Forgotten Harvest. Their "feel good fridge" program has supplied us with one freezer and two refrigerators. This is the second. We'll use it for bagged lunches prep and to keep produce and dairy products fresh for our residents. The double door refrigerator replaces one that's been at CHMI for 11+ years. It needed a lot of repairs and was costly to keep running. Going forward we will be able to save money on energy and repairs. Big shout out to our community partner, Forgotten Harvest for your unconditional love, absolute respect and relentless support for the young people we serve. We are truly grateful.
