Today is #GenderDay at #COP29. Climate change is not only an environmental issue, but a driver of gender-based violence and harassment in the world of work,?particularly in the Global South. Extreme weather events expose women workers to violence and risk, particularly in sectors like mining, agriculture, manufacturing and the informal economy. The transition to a green economy must prioritize gender equality. ?? The UN Secretary-General’s Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals has called for global action rooted in equity and justice. The final report has laid out principles and recommendations to create urgently necessary change in mineral supply chains: ? ?? It says that “human rights must be at the core of all mineral value chains,” and calls on all actors to protect human rights and Indigenous Peoples' rights.? ?? It recognizes that we must protect the planet’s integrity, “redouble our efforts to safeguard the integrity of the environment” and reduce consumption to protect the planet. ??It acknowledges that trade rules need to change so mineral-producing developing countries can benefit more from their resources. Crucially, the Panel recognizes that justice requires change. ?? We now need strong collective action to put these ambitions into practice: inclusive, multi-stakeholder action that heeds the voices of those most affected by mining. We call on governments and companies to follow the Panel’s recommendation to ensure equitable, inclusive and participatory approaches that will leave no one behind. Let’s make it happen! ?? FORGE is pleased to announce the first round of grantees have been selected for the Democracy at Work Fund (DAWF), coordinated by Fundación Avina. The DAWF is a collaborative fund to support workers’ organizations leading efforts at the intersection of labor rights, democracy, and a just energy transition, and is the first multi-donor pooled fund supporting workers’ organizations in the Global South. The selected projects focus on diverse impacted groups, ranging from informal workers, domestic workers, and rural laborers to professionals in specialized sectors like journalism and health care. These projects focus on issues like unionization, digital inclusion, climate action, and safety - working to empower and amplify the collective voice of marginalized groups across diverse countries and contexts. Excellent to see more of International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) highlighting the critical issue of #extremeheat affecting informal workers and settlement dwellers. This #climateheathazard was identified in the @TheWorldBank, WaterAid, and International Labour Organization #SanitationWorkersInitiative on mitigating health hazards. Presenting this work on #sanitationworkers 3 years ago, I recall every time we got to the #ClimateHeatHazard part, there was a disquieting silence on what to do with that information. The #ClimateHeatHazard extends beyond simply navigating "hot temperatures", there's compounding factor where it disproportionately impacts those in labor-intensive informal jobs and living in informal settlements. #ManualLaborers, #SanitationWorkers, #WastePickers, #StreetVendors, and #Migrants are particularly vulnerable. Extreme heat poses significant health risks, reduces productivity, and can lead to economic losses for these already vulnerable populations.
