Jujutsu, the precursor to Judo, developed as a method for defeating armed and armored samurai warriors during Japan's feudal period. The techniques focused on using leverage and the opponent's force against them, which was essential for unarmed combatants facing formidable adversaries. The Collection of Swords 1588 played a major role in the popularization of grappling arts like Jujutsu. The edict stated: "The farmers of all provinces are strictly forbidden to have in their possession any swords, short swords, bows, spears, firearms or other types of weapons. If unnecessary implements are kept, the collection of annual rent (nengu) may become more difficult, and without provocation uprisings can be fomented." Swords would be reserved only for the samurai warrior class. During the Katanagari (sword hunt) many common people of Japan adapted to these unjust regulations and the emphasis on unarmed combat skill

In New York it feels like crime has been on the rise, knowing how to defend oneself is more than just a valuable skill—it's a necessity nowadays. Whether it is road rage on the Long Island Expressway or hostile commuters on the LIRR. People seem to feel more embolden to act more violent toward their fellow Long Islanders then in recent memory. Among the myriad of martial arts, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) stand out as particularly effective forms of self-defense. Here’s why these disciplines are essential for anyone looking to enhance their self-protection capabilities.

When it comes to self-defense, choosing the right martial art can make all the difference. For women, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) offers unparalleled advantages over striking arts like boxing or kickboxing. While these striking arts rely on full-body rotation to generate power, this power is ultimately tied to the practitioner’s body weight. For many women, this means that their punches or kicks might not pack enough force to incapacitate a larger, stronger attacker. Instead, BJJ provides a strategic and effective alternative.

Achieving the rank of black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a testament to dedication, skill, and perseverance. Unlike some martial arts where black belts can be attained in a few short years, BJJ requires a significantly longer commitment. On average, it takes practitioners about 10 to 15 years to earn their black belt. This extended timeline reflects the complexity of the art, the depth of knowledge required, and the physical and mental development necessary to master BJJ.

Research supports the idea that BJJ can benefit veterans with mental health challenges. For example, a 2019 study by MilMed found that veterans who participated in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for 5 months or 40 sessions, "demonstrated clinically meaningful improvements in their PTSD symptoms as well as decreased symptoms of major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety and decreased alcohol use". #PTSD #veterans #mentalhealth

In recent years, there has been a cultural shift towards normalizing what has been coined as the Dad Bod or the Craft Beer Body. This trend suggests that it's acceptable to carry extra weight as long as one has broad shoulders and strong arms. Clothing brands like True Classics have embraced this concept by marketing specifically to this body type, offering shirts with tapered sleeves to accentuate biceps and a loose fit around the stomach.
