The Forest Preserve District of Kane County is now the proud steward of an additional 298 +/- acres in Huntley. The property includes dozens of 125-year-old oak trees, never-been-plowed sedge meadow, and over 25 acres of prime waterfowl habitat, and is just northwest of Rutland Forest Preserve. District staff are ecstatic over the long-awaited investment. See more in our Press Release at https://bit.ly/FPDKCnews

In the run-up to our 100th anniversary in June 2025, the Forest Preserve District of Kane County is sharing some of it's history, carefully researched by Al Watts of Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley: On June 7, 1924, petitions to put the forest preserve question on the ballot were readied and handed out at a meeting in Elgin of the Kane County Federation of Women's Clubs. Illinois's Forest Preserve District Act of 1913 required the signatures of at least 500 citizens of a county to put the establishment of a county forest preserve district on the ballot. "It is very important that this be settled now," wrote the St. Charles Chronicle, "for even now it is late to select at a reasonable price, the most desired lands for such a provision." "Each year," the Chronicle continued, "enhances the price of desirable lands, and this makes it [immediate] that action should be done soon." #fpdkchistory #celebrating100years #forestpreserve #elgin #stcharlesil

The Forest Preserve District of Kane County mourns the loss of our friend and colleague, Police Officer Ed Lopez. Ed passed away June 26 following a brief illness. He led a life dedicated to public service. Ed was a U.S. Army veteran, an officer with the Hanover Park Police Department for 26 years, followed by 10 years as an officer with the Forest Preserve District of Kane County. He also served part-time with the Village of Maple Park. Our hearts go out to Ed’s wife Pamela, their family, friends, coworkers and all who served with him. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 3, from 3-8 p.m. at Olson’s Quiram Sycamore Funeral Chapel in Sycamore. One of the Forest Preserve District’s Finest, he will be dearly missed.
