Shipments of #woodpellets to Europe have consistently increased year-over-year since they were first traded in the European market. Over the last decade, the average annual increase in trade was 13% with global shipments reaching an all-time high of over 30 million tons in 2022. In 2023, the uninterrupted increase in global wood pellet trade spanning over a decade came to a halt, with European imports falling for the second consecutive year. Torrefied black pellets are a type of bioenergy product generated from #biomass materials like wood chips, forest residues, or agricultural waste. The torrefication process yields a robust and energy-dense pellet that shares many characteristics with #coal. But unlike coal, they're produced from renewable resources and offer a lower #carbon alternative. A Market.us analysis shows that the black pellet industry is already valued at over $100 million. A 15.3% forecasted growth rate over the next decade will vault that number up to $434 million. In 2022, the UK imported 7.52 million metric tons of wood pellets for #energyproduction. This was down from a five-year high of 9.13 million tons in 2021. For the first 11 months of 2023, the UK imported less than 6 million metric tons of #woodpellets, with a significant portion of 4.24 million tons from the US. Rolling through the first month of 2023, many companies are starting to pay attention to all the requirements of the EUDR and how they can stay in compliance. For those who may not know, the European Union Deforestation-Free Supply Chain Regulation (#EUDR) has set mandatory reporting requirements to ensure commodities like wood products, beef, palm oil, and soy are produced without directly contributing to further global deforestation. That means businesses must demonstrate that their products don't involve land that has been deforested or caused forest degradation. Any businesses that deal in these commodities by placing them on the European market (or exports from it) are bound by the new regulations. Through due diligence and historical record-keeping, they must be able to show a clean record across the value chain to their product. Otherwise, they can face delisting from all commerce on the European market. ResourceWise has been covering this story since the details first emerged in June of last year. Since then, the European Commission has taken several steps to help clarify exactly what compliance will look like before December 30, 2024, when the EUDR officially begins enforcing the requirements. European softwood sawlog prices have experienced a roller coaster since the start of the #pandemic. The European Softwood Price Index (ESPI), which includes prices across 9 European countries, hit an 11-year low in 2020, followed by some truly monumental highs into 2022. Since then, the ESPI has seen a fallout recently hitting a 12% quarter-over-quarter drop between Q2 and Q3 2023 (the most recent reporting data available). In 2023, we saw 73 million m3 of total softwood #lumber production across North America (Canada and the US). This was down about 4 million m3 from 2022, showing a stark decrease in year-over-year totals. Why such a big drop? For one, economic instability in the US—with #recession fears, high interest rates, and sagging housing starts—have lowered overall #demand. In Canada, environmental factors such as the record-setting 2023 #wildfires have impacted supply capacity and overall harvesting and production confidence.
