Earlier this month in Bangkok, we gathered with Future of Life Institute for an engaging Existential Hope Dinner. Our Existential Hope Director Beatrice Erkers and Program Director Lou de Kerhuelvez joined philosopher David Pearce and an amazing group of minds to explore what beneficial futures could look like. Moving beyond technical challenges, we dove into the bigger questions of how transformative technologies can help create futures we're excited about. Both Future of Life Institute's Futures Program and our Existential Hope program share this vision - looking beyond just building new tech to really understanding how it can make life better for everyone. Thanks to everyone who joined us for making it such an energizing evening of ideas and possibilities.

Nicholas Siegler, Chief Technologist of NASA's Exoplanet Exploration Program at JPL, shared insights on detecting life beyond our solar system at the Space Futures & Governance Workshop, hosted by Foresight Institute and OpenLunar Foundation. Siegler detailed the challenges of observing exoplanets through space telescopes, particularly the contrast problem where starlight is billions of times brighter than planetary reflection. He presented two innovative solutions: * Internal coronagraphs: Advanced optical systems that will fly within the next 18 months * External starshades: Baseball diamond-sized structures that could revolutionize planetary observation. The presentation highlighted NASA's commitment to the Habitable Worlds Observatory, planned for the late 2030s, which will be capable of searching for Earth-like planets and will feature robotic servicing capabilities.
