Celebrating Women’s Resilience on International Women’s Day (8 March) During World War II, a group of determined women took on the physically demanding job of operating cargo-carrying narrowboats on the Midlands’ canals. ??♀? Susan Woolfitt, one of these trailblazers, captured their experiences in her book Idle Women—a vivid account of the challenges and triumphs these women faced in a predominantly male industry. From surviving bombing raids on the Regent’s Canal to battling freezing conditions and long, grueling days, these women played a crucial role in the war effort, proving their resilience and adaptability. The book not only highlights their struggles but also the beauty of the countryside and the deep satisfaction of their work. The term Idle Women came from the "IW" (Inland Waterways) badges they wore—a nickname they embraced with pride. Originally published in 1947, this book remains an inspiring testament to the courage and contribution of women in history. ??♀? ?? A successful first FOREMAST General Assembly and live demonstration! ?? The FOREMAST project held its first General Assembly on January 29–30, 2025, in Ghent, Belgium, bringing together key partners to advance Small Flexible Automated Zero-emissions (SFAZ) vessels for modern logistics.?? Hosted by Ghent University and OHB, the two day meeting featured work package presentations and living lab discussions, alongside a live test sail of the AVATAR vessel, remotely controlled by SEAFAR Remote Control Center. The partners experienced remote sailing, collision avoidance, and digital twinning, showcasing the future of inland waterway transport.???
