Living Lab 3: Galati ???? Revolutionizing inland and Black Sea coastal waterway transport in Galati, Romania! ?????? Living Lab 3 will develop an optimized Small, Flexible, Autonomous Zero-Emission Vessel (SFAZ) concept tailored for Romania, addressing the specific inland and Black Sea coastal navigation areas. This includes the extensive waterway network connecting Gala?i – Tulcea – Sulina – Constanta – Medgidia – Cernavoda – Braila –Galati and the Danube Delta’s network of shallow channels. The environmental research vessel REXDAN will be used for data-driven modelling and selective testing of FOREMAST innovations with a transferability focus. Key innovations: ?? ?? We had a fantastic time at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona from 5-7 November, where FOREMAST joined a panel discussion on Multimodal Smart City Mobility and Logistics! Represented by Jeanett Bolther, PNO Consultants and together with other leading projects: SYNCHROMODE Project, DISCO Project, SPINE, and CLEVER, we explored how synchronized, multimodal transport systems are transforming urban mobility across Europe. ?? FOREMAST at ICMASS 2024 We were thrilled to participate in the 6th International Conference on Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (ICMASS 2024), held on October 29-30 in Trondheim, Norway. During the session, “Navigating the Future: Innovations and Advancements in Smart, Autonomous Inland and Short-Sea Shipping,” we joined forces with projects AUTOFLEX HEU Project, SEAMLESS Project, and ReNEW to highlight our achievements and tackle challenges in green shipping, smart technologies, and maritime safety. FOREMAST was represented on stage by our project coordinator Tomas Ambra from INLECOM and Matko Barisic from ABB, who shared key insights on FOREMAST's role in advancing sustainable practices in inland waterways and short-sea operations. Our partners emphasized the importance of: ??? Building autonomous navigation on European infrastructure like Galileo, EGNOS, and Copernicus. ?? Integrating EU public funds and projects into private company strategies to enhance market uptake. ?? Promoting data sharing and standards to ensure the transferability of digital solutions across different regions in Europe, allowing vessels to interact seamlessly with inland waterway infrastructure. ?? Introducing FOREMAST Living Lab 2: Caen and Le Havre ???? Unlocking the future of inland waterway logistics in Caen, France! ??? Living Lab 2 in Caen will explore remote-controlled sailing in real-life conditions. Situated along the River Orne and connected to the English Channel by the Caen to the Sea Canal, the city benefits from an intricate network of canals, locks, and industrial ports that support maritime transport and commerce. This waterway infrastructure is central to Caen’s economy, particularly in logistics and transportation. ?? Innovations to be demonstrated: ?? Automated vessel operations ? Zero-emissions propulsion systems ?? Modal shift from road to inland waterways for efficient freight movement Meanwhile, Le Havre is taking on an equally important role by offering an estuary environment to test the design of a coastal barge and address the regulatory differences between inland and maritime transport. This simulation will focus on green energy solutions and reverse logistics, contributing vital data to the project's digital twin. ??♀?
