What does career-connected learning look like in a Ford NGL community? It looks like students gaining hands-on experience, building confidence, and stepping directly into careers that serve their communities. The Racine Unified School District (RUSD) is shaping the future of public safety by giving students real-world experiences that prepare them for careers in firefighting and emergency medical services. Through a partnership with Gateway Technical College and the Racine Fire Department, students develop the skills and mindset needed to step into high-stakes roles. One student has already been hired as a cadet—a testament to how hands-on learning fuels both confidence and career success. Excited to share a glimpse into our recent “Learning By Doing: Adulting Skills Series” at Batesville High School. Our Freshman Community students experienced community-connected learning through real-world learning as they navigated five engaging rotations designed to sharpen professional skills and build confidence. Students practiced 3?minute conversations in diverse, everyday scenarios—from chatting with a checkout clerk to engaging in small talk in a doctor’s office—demonstrating empathy and effective communication. They also honed practical skills by making appointment calls, addressing envelopes to thank community partners, mastering the art of tying a tie, and selecting appropriate work attire based on various professional contexts. This week, while at Mackie Academy in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, I stayed into the evening to catch a glimpse of their senior phase pathway event for students and their parents/caregivers. I loved the nod to their School Leaver Profile (similar to a Portrait of a Graduate) and the prompts and confidence builders posted throughout the different spaces where potential employer, college and university representatives were located as well as school teaching staff who could discuss going for advanced and advanced higher coursework. This week, our Executive Director, Roger Curtis, joined the Muskegon Public Schools and United Way of the Lakeshore teams to explore exciting new ways to integrate our Jobs For Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) and Connecting Careers to the Core services into their innovative career-focused culture and Ford Next Generation Learning (Ford NGL) academies. ??
