This op-ed in Devex by Ford's Atila Roque, Vuyiswa Sidzumo and Otto Saki highlights why the G20 must follow the lead of civil society to address global justice. From Indonesia to India to Brazil, we've seen grassroots movements from the Global South drive real change, including on international financial reform, climate change and hunger. As the first African nation to head the G20, South Africa must now build on this momentum and ensure civil society has a voice in G20 decision-making, from debt reform to sustainable development.

Around the world, we make grants that support the visionary people and organizations who work to challenge inequality.
关于我们
The Ford Foundation is a global, grant-making philanthropy that works to disrupt inequality in all its forms. We believe in the inherent dignity of all people. But around the world, too many people are excluded from the political, economic, and social institutions that shape their lives. In addressing this reality, we are guided by a vision of social justice—a world in which all individuals, communities, and peoples work toward the protection and full expression of their human rights; are active participants in the decisions that affect them; share equitably in the knowledge, wealth, and resources of society; and are free to achieve their full potential. Across eight decades, our mission has been to reduce poverty and injustice, strengthen democratic values, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement. We work in 11 regional offices around the world and support programs in more than 50 countries.

"The reason that people are seeking to oppress you is not because you are weak or fragile. It's precisely because you're powerful and tremendous." At this year’s Ford Foundation Free Future event to prevent gender violence around the world, ALOK Vaid-Menon shared their perspective on what it means to live as your fullest, freest self—even in the face of opposition. #TDoR This video is part of the #FreeFuture series from the Ford Foundation and The Meteor.

Today is #GenderDay at #COP29. Climate change disproportionately impacts women, especially in the Global South. The shift to a green economy can't leave women workers behind. This powerful photo essay, part of the ongoing FORGE: Funders Organized for Rights in the Global Economy Women Rising series with Devex, highlights how women's contributions to climate solutions often go unrecognized and unpaid, and the urgent need to center gender in climate action. We need a just transition that ensures decent work, social protection, and a seat at the table for women workers. https://lnkd.in/etPP-89i

?? “This is often called the "COP of finances," yet we see the same power structures that created this crisis.” – Balkisou Buba, REPALEAC Balkisou Buba of REPALEAC & GATC delivered a powerful keynote at the “Advancing forest tenure rights” event, where she emphasized the need for a more ambitious, inclusive pledge that truly centers Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IP&LCs) as partners—not just beneficiaries, holding crucial solutions to the climate crisis. Balkisou highlighted the initial Glasgow Pledge progress, where direct funding for IP&LCs rose from 2.1% in 2022 to 10.6% in 2023, yet called for further action for more direct funding, annual evaluations with IP&LCs, and dismantling financial barriers to empower Indigenous-led mechanisms and protect our planet for future generations. A truly transformative pledge is one built alongside Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities and recognizes their traditional governance as the backbone of territorial stewardship. The call today is clear: decolonize financial systems and empower the world’s true guardians of nature to continue safeguarding our planet for generations to come. A just energy transition must protect more than the environment: It must also ensure this shift is fair, equitable, and inclusive of local communities. Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous country and a rapidly developing economy, stands at a pivotal moment for increasing its renewable energy supply and furthering economic justice for its people. Maryati Abdullah, program officer for Ford’s Natural Resources & Climate Change program, explains how an innovative investment agreement is helping Indonesia’s transition. #COP29 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eJGS97wC

Donors are closer to delivering the $1.7 billion promised to support Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in their roles as forest guardians, but we must continue working with urgency to ensure these resources reach frontline organizations directly. #COP29 https://lnkd.in/dq5uWyaA
