Today at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History I had the privilege of speaking with their terrific director, historian and friend, Anthea M. Hartig, Ph.D, about the Museum’s extraordinary collection of items related to the Lincoln assassination: the top hat he wore to Ford’s Theater, a flag from the funeral train, the teacup he used before leaving the White House for Ford’s, the blood stained shirt cuffs of the star of the play and a doctor who attended him, and the shackles used do restrain the captured assassins. My first visit to this museum was as a fifth grader. I recall the impact it had then on my interest in American history. And every time I visit to see these and other very real objects, history comes alive to me in a whole new way. Stay tuned for a future episode of the White House 1600 Sessions to hear the stories of these extraordinary items. ????

?? Happy International Women’s Day to a woman we would not exist without—Ford’s Theatre Society founder, Frankie Hewitt! For 100 years, our historic theatre sat empty and quiet. Secretary of the Interior, Stewart Udall, planned to recreate the theatre exactly as it was the night of Lincoln’s assassination, complete with the set of “Our American Cousin,” but Frankie had bigger plans. Thanks to her, we are a living memorial that continues to explore Lincoln’s legacy through live performances.
