A panel of three judges on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals today questioned lawyers from the Department of Justice, TikTok and its parent company ByteDance, and users of the app about the constitutionality of the Protecting Americans From Foreign Controlled Applications Act, which Congress passed and President Biden signed back in April. Under the law, ByteDance would have to sell TikTok — a sale that the Chinese government has said is illegal under Chinese law — or see it banned in the United States as of January 19, 2025. ByteDance, TikTok, and “creators” who post on the app have challenged the law, arguing (among other things) that it violates the First Amendment. At the oral argument, Judges Sri Srinavasan, Douglas Ginsburg, and Neomi Rao were focused largely on the recommendations algorithm that powers TikTok’s powerful For You page. The algorithm — which is the primary determiner of what videos people see on the app — is written by engineers for TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, many of whom work from China.

Newly published research has revealed how threat actors are using a devious new technique to force Chrome browser users to reveal their Google account passwords out of nothing more than sheer frustration. The credential-stealing campaign, which uses malware called StealC, locks the user’s browser in kiosk mode while blocking both the F11 and ESC keys to prevent them from escaping out of this full-screen mode. The only thing displayed on the browser screen while in this annoying and seemingly unescapable kiosk mode is a login window, most often for your Google account itself, according to the researchers. https://trib.al/ItDErRK

Vancouver-based startup Fox Fold is transforming the hotel bathroom landscape with its sustainable toilet tissue made from bamboo rather than trees and a dispenser that eliminates the need to throw out unused product. The company estimates that an average premium hotel with 300 rooms goes through just over 40,000 rolls of tissue paper per year and that up to half of that inventory gets thrown away, leading to a huge cost in waste every year. Just six months after its launch Fox Fold is working with some of the world's biggest hospitality brands, as it targets a share of the North American tissue and hygiene paper market, estimated to be worth US$60 billion.
