Maine's forest economy is getting a huge, $22-million boost to position us as a global leader in forest-based biomaterial production and manufacturing. FOR/Maine is proud to be part of this effort. Led by Maine Technology Institute, Maine's Forest Bioproducts Advanced Manufacturing Tech Hub was launched in 2023 to accelerate development of new materials and products derived from wood that can bolster critical industries like housing, eliminate the use of toxic materials, and replace imported plastics and other materials derived from fossil fuels. Members and supporters of FOR/ME recently toured the #masstimber building currently under construction at Jesup Memorial Library in @Bar Harbor and two completed mass timber buildings at the College of the Atlantic. All three buildings used cross-laminated timber products. The Jesup Library expansion will save 37% on its carbon footprint. This project represents a new market for Maine softwood, such as eastern hemlock, and is the first in the region.
