A unique cross-sector collaboration created to maintain and improve Maine's great forest economy.

Forest Opportunity Roadmap / MAINE Strong forests. Strong economy. Strong communities. Forest Opportunity Roadmap / Maine (FOR/Maine) is a unique cross-sector collaboration between industry, communities, government, education, and non-profits, which have come together to realize the next generation of Maine’s great forest economy. The coalition was created with support from the U.S. Economic Development Agency and U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. FOR/Maine is convening scores of industry, community, research, investment and government stakeholders to conduct coordinated research, formulate strategy, and harness extensive global expertise as part of a long-term, U.S. Economic Development Administration-backed effort to strengthen Maine’s $8.5-billion, 33,000-job forest economy and position the state as a leader in emerging global forest product markets. Among the reports FOR/Maine will release by year’s end are: - A global market analysis aimed at identifying current and emerging global demand for forest products, and the markets where Maine is likely to be most competitive. This will also enable FOR Maine to identify the necessary policy and industry changes to keep Maine forest products competitive. - A wood supply analysisaimed at determining Maine’s current and potential wood supply and how it can meet global demands. - A Forest Economy Strategic Plan that will identify the global forest products markets Maine can best compete in and the actions necessary to create a more diverse forest economy and increase our economic output. FOR/Maine is also working closely with leadership in forest communities, including the six towns in Maine that have had mills close in recent years. The coalition is actively involved in efforts to diversify economic opportunities for these communities, supporting efforts to redevelop mill sites, provide more resources for brownfield cleanup and improve broadband access in rural areas.

Maine's forest economy is getting a huge, $22-million boost to position us as a global leader in forest-based biomaterial production and manufacturing. FOR/Maine is proud to be part of this effort. Led by Maine Technology Institute, Maine's Forest Bioproducts Advanced Manufacturing Tech Hub was launched in 2023 to accelerate development of new materials and products derived from wood that can bolster critical industries like housing, eliminate the use of toxic materials, and replace imported plastics and other materials derived from fossil fuels. An inspiring example innovative and practical approaches to expanding Maine's forest economy and workforce. #Dirigo! TimberHP University of Maine University of Maine System (UMS) Yellow Light Breen Rosie Vanadestine CEcD
Joshua Henry, former UMaine chemistry professor, and Matthew O’Malia founded TimberHP to drive the next generation of sustainable building materials. To achieve this, they revitalized the shuttered Madison paper mill, creating North America’s first wood fiber insulation plant using the waste stream from the lumber industry. Today, they’re manufacturing at scale with UMaine alums and former mill employees on staff, and are partnering with UMaine Advanced Structures & Composites Center for product testing. #UMaine #Maine

Members and supporters of FOR/ME recently toured the #masstimber building currently under construction at Jesup Memorial Library in @Bar Harbor and two completed mass timber buildings at the College of the Atlantic. All three buildings used cross-laminated timber products. The Jesup Library expansion will save 37% on its carbon footprint. This project represents a new market for Maine softwood, such as eastern hemlock, and is the first in the region.
